Doc Films: A Haven For Movie Fans

I haven't really consider UChicago as one of my top choices, but after seeing its tour video on the official site... I have to admit, I think it's a fantastic place. Gothic buildings + great city + idiosyncratic students = what's not to love?

One thing that attracted the most is Doc Films. I'm a huge movie fan and the fact that UChicago has the oldest student-run movie society is hugely appealing.

So my question is what is Doc Films like?

i can't tell you firsthand, but my student host for my overnight volunteered there once a week. i can ask her if it would be ok to pm you her email, or i can ask her any questions you'd like.

People love Doc Films. They have lots of movies, some special events (Robert Redford came last term to show his new film), and opportunities to get involved running the group.

Doc Films is one of the campus's best-kept secrets, only that it's not really a secret. Going to movies there is easy (obviously), volunteering is also pretty easy, but getting on the committee that selects the films is like getting anointed the Pope.

Weeknights (M-Th) are usually obscure-ish movies and every weeknight has a theme. The theme is either a director (last quarter was Kurosawa; this quarter is Almodovar) or a topic (movies about Westward expansion, movies about Mormons).

Weekends are popular movies, with a mix of old, new, and silly. (American Gangster, Happy Feet, Casablanca). The movie showing Friday night of tenth week is always a stupid crowdpleaser (Snakes on a Plane, Superbad, etc.) as that's the one where there will be lots and lots of drunken revelry.

Also... during Winter Quarter, Thursday nights are double-feature nights. The first is traditional, the second is ... ummm... how do I say this... an erotic film.

Doc films is probably one of my absolute favorite things here, I went quite a bit last quarter, more than I expected, and this quarter I think I've been to about 7 or 8 movies already(it's only 4th week). I think Unalove summed it up very well, the only thing I could add is price: A ticket is five dollars a movie, or 26 dollars for a quarter pass(unlimited use for the quarter) the first time and 24 dollars for a pass if you bought one the last quarter.

Read the calendar, and you have a good sense of it. The theater is in Ida - 2 blocks from the quads, and is very nice for a modern theater inside.

Is it as big as AMC? Wow, 26 $ unlimited... how better could it be? ^Natalie, yeah plz pm me.

This term's Doc calendar is not as strong as calendars of the past, but I still believe that Doc is one of the best institutions at UofC.

Doc Films really excites me too!!!
I only regret I didn't mention it in my why Chicago essay. It just didn't fit in with the theme of my essay.

Robert Redford Came To Doc Film!!!!!!!

Does anyone have any experience with Fire Escape films?

I know people in it-- it's a cool club.

Hey folks,

Publicity chair of Doc here. It's great to see so much love for our group here, but I wanted to clarify a few things.

1: Unalove's assessment of our series topics are pretty accurate, but we don't restrict ourselves to directors or topics - anything that can be a cohesive series is fair game (I'm vaguely planning one based on aspect ratio, for example - if it's voted in, it'll be the geekiest Doc series ever.)

2: Admission is $5 for a movie, $26 for a pass - or free if you volunteer!

3: Unalove wrote, "getting on the committee that selects the films is like getting anointed the Pope."
While that would be sort of awesome in a culty way, all you really have to do to get on the programming board is a) show up for the weekly programming meetings and/or b) sign up for the docprog listhost:

https://mailman.cs.uchicago.edu/mailman/listinfo/docprog.

You don't even need to be a student to be a programmer (or a volunteer, for that matter).

Anyway, if you have any more questions, email me!

Love,

Becca (& the rest of Doc)

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I know one club is particularly impenetrable... maybe MAB for Summer Breeze guests? I get these things confused after a while.

By the way, this quarter has been pretty sweet!
