Asians are a part of affirmative action, but they are a part of the group that must try harder to get accepted; even harder than caucasians.

I think asians are "so abundant that they aren't considered in affirmative action," and technically ARE a minority, but being asian doesn't really help in admissions because they're so many of them. So they're not like URM or anything, so I guess, consequently.. not "ethnically diverse" in university admissions.

When I say they aren't considered, I mean that being asian doesn't help you under affirmative action policies.

I think what icymoon is saying is that even though asians are a minority, they are most likely not an under-represented minority in the eyes of recruiting efforts for admissions. Over 15% of those students reporting ethnicity currently enrolled are Asian.

exactamente :)

great to see this is now the "are asians a minority?" thread...jk

population distribtion of US as of last year:
blacks ~~ almost 10%
hispanics ~~ a litte over 12%
asians ~~ almost 3 %
native american ~~less than1%
whites - everyhing else.
so asians are not so abundant that they dont count anymore. its just that sigh, as wrong as it is, even though the REAL asian population is < either blacks' or hispanics'popuations, they dont count. i thinkthis isnt fair.
o well.
good job ongettin he vision letter thing. :)

Yeah, asians are a minority in the u.s., but not a minority in admissions.

I agree it's not fair, but there's not much we can do about it.

notaperfectangel-
Here are the stats from class of 2008 http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~instresr/ricefacts/students.html. You can compare them to the US population stats. If the population of Asians in the US is less than 3 %, but over 15% at school, I guess that is why asians are likely not considered URMS. The % of the other minority groups are less than that listed in your statistic, so I suppose would then be considered URM's.

there's more hispanics than asians? That's interesting. I thought it was the other way around.

So, this VISION thing is only for minorities and asians are considered one?

Just curious about all you who got the invitation go VISIONS, did you guys apply ID or RD?

It's the place to be if you're going to be an optometrist.

ecnerwalc3321, vision 2005 is for "ethnically diverse" people, which includes minorities but not asians.

athlon, I think they were IDers.

alright, thanks

yeah, i applied ID and got the vision invite

i talked to the lady scheduling the thing today and she says that people all over the US got invited...just to let you guys know...

what are you talking about?

oh ok, thanks coqui.

ecnerwalc, she's talking about people who got invited to the vision 2005 weekend.

Well, I know that, but I thought it was for minorities only.... That's it. I'm not coming on this thread again. I'm making a fool of myself.

what? i didnt get one?? I am azn...should I call in or something?? maybe that is a sign...i am not accepted...oh my gosh!! what to do??? should i call????????????//
