Good point Eminent_Youtom!!

My toilet is better than yours. It’s just that simple. Sorry if you are offended

Lol. First off eminent_youtom, not everything is about you; stop being so egocentric! And this thread is not directed at ESL students (I am not an evil person!).

And secondly, is it horrible that I find it amusing that writing coherently is according to you guys only something the elites do? I find it a tad repulsive as well, as if you’re saying regular Joes and Janes can’t and shouldn’t be able to spell correctly.

No, my post was not ignorant, it is based on this forum and this forum alone which is what we’re examining. I’m not saying transfer students are dumb (and it would be rather stupid to imply that because one cannot write correctly one has cognitive deficiencies, wouldn’t it?) I am just saying it’s frightening to see how poorly college students write.

How funny. You’ve all epitomized the exact attitudes you were condemning. Bravo!

Agreed eminent_youtom. CBBolts claims these are “basic skills”, but they are only so for a few. Some people have different upbringings. It would be stupid to assume everyone should know English.

My nonnative english speaking friends know more about the language than most native speakers do. I mean, can anyone aside from English tutors even explain to a person what a modal verb is or how to use the proper article in a given situation?

Ask a high school or college student what an article is, and they would say it’s something in the newspaper.

sophee i’m with you on this one girl. don’t worry.

people like nickthecoolest don’t make it very far in life and will be a social outcast wherever he goes.

Your post was ignorant. You were being intentionally vague, and only now have you decided to clarify yourself. People have different learning styles and areas of expertise. You should stop judging other people because when they figure out you’re only 17, you’ll be laughed at.

I feel more sorry for those poor high school graduates from the united states, who can’t even do simple arithmetics, than people like me who have poor English skills. What a poor educational system which cannot even teach students how to do subtractions. I am sure you might have some cousins, brothers, sisters or friend who can’t even spell Chemistry despite being a native english speaker.

Why not you go and teach them how to do simple algebra rather than making fun of progressing students.
Shame on you… I am afraid that I might have to deal with people like you in UCB.

Yes, because only the elite should or are able to write their native language correctly. :)

And I agree completely, wine is the exact same as language. How could you not expect someone to identify two different types of wines, especially when one is red and the other is white?

Intentionally vague? Hmm. Do explain.

all of you stop getting worked up over what this nick kid said. he won’t make it very far in life and it’s quite obvious that his superior way of thinking is due to his insecurity. i’m sure the lack of a social life takes a toll on poor kids like nick. we pray for you.

Again Nick,
I never said that only elite are able to write good English or whatever.
Sometime I wish that I was a writer rather than a math students. I do regret for not learning English skills during my High School years, when I was back home.

But remember that “language is like a finger which is useful to point the moon, but once the other person understand the idea, it is no more useful.”

Again, I do agree with you that lots of college students, despite being native English speaker, don’t even know how to write an essay without using slang.

@ Nick: yes.

@ weezy: for someone who’s so quick to point out arrogance and frivolity, you sure seem to feel pretty (over?) confident about your perception of the way the world works. i’ve said it once (though not to you), and i’ll say it again…

stop telling us how it ‘izzz’, man.

eminent_youtom: Yes and as you’ve written before you’ve eclipsed some of them in terms of ability to write well so congratulations. It would seem illogical to require foreigners to learn English to perfection.

dude, it’s a forum, not an English class!
some just come to chill and look up information!

like me, I’m chillin’.

right… pinker. that would make sense how?

i’ve just stated the obvious, which everyone could see. if you can’t see through him then maybe you should work on your social skills. read his first post, then tell me why i’m wrong in a logical manner. until then, like i’ve stated before (though not to you), and i’ll definately say it again…

this is an ‘a’ and ‘b’ conversation. so ‘C’ your way out of it. ^

uh… why do people who are not majoring English need perfect English grammar?

I don’t understand that

Well, to me, it’s more frightening to see college students who don’t even know
the correct definition of function (which is the basic of basic).

It’s more frightening to see college students who can’t solve basic science problems.

BTW, I’m math major with poor English skills =)

Beast0460 I am with you.

But I disagree on the point that people who are not majoring in English don’t need good English.
Yes They do. By the end of the day, we have to deal with non-science people who does not know the difference between biology and chemistry. Thus to be a competitive student, we do need a good English skill.
However, we should not be disappointed by the fact that people like NICK makes fun of our weakness.

Lol. Weezy, please stop. You are making no sense. How does my post elicit any of your presumptions?

again… if you want to debate please back up your arguments with legitimate support. i thought your speciality was in english. read back to my posts and use my quotes as evidence if you want to counterargue my assumptions which i logically supported with your ignorance. thank you. _ _ ^_ _

oh and i’m certainly not waving to you.

I like to debate but this conversation is going in circles.
