Is this correct: new cadets just have walking privileges during Parent Weekend of 10/13; what on Acceptance Day? So when does new cadet get to leave campus to crash and burn in parents' hotel room, that I've read usually happens. Thanks from confused mom.

By A-Day (so also PPW) they will be Cadets and no longer New Cadets. Portions of PPW will be Off Post Priviledges. In the past this has meant a 75 mile radius including NYC on Sunday and Monday during PPW. Only Walking Priviledges on Saturday of PPW. A-Day weekend is only Walking Priviledges. Depending on where your hotel is determines if they can go to your room and "crash and burn." Hotels in Highland Falls and Ft. Montgomery are in the Walking Priviledges area. This is what was allowable in the past. All is subject to change depending on what is allowed this year. Your then Cadet will have official orders on what is allowed and what is not prior to the events.

Please make sure you and your kid follow those official orders. The surrounding community is a small place and cadets go everywhere. Don't be that plebe who is seen in Central Valley in civilian clothes on Acceptance Day. It's not pretty when they get back to post and have to explain it to their platoon leader.

Yeah, we ran into that kind of situation on PPW. Plebes are required to be in uniform at all times in public, even when parents take them to the mall within the allowed distance. At the mall we saw a lot of cadets in uniform and our cadet noticed some there who weren't. Evidently several were noticed also by upperclassmen/women as well and were reported. Follow instructions.

when do cadets get awarded the NDSM?

Paragraph 2-10, Army Regulation 600-8-22 (Military Awards)
25 February 1995

....

f. Cadets of the U.S. Military Academy are eligible for the NDSM, during any of the inclusive periods listed above, upon completion of the swearing-in ceremonies as a cadet.

Civilian + Military Acronyms = Confused. What's the NDSM?

google it man. National defense service medal. you get it for signing up during times of war.

Alright, thanks for clearing that up.

so when do cadets start wearing it? cuz i see recent pics with some with it on and others not wearing it? also, what about marksmanship badges? are rotc cadets allowed to wear the NDSM?

ROTC ar not authorized to wear it.

That's because technically, ROTC aren't Active Duty Army. You won't wear Marksmanship badges--you'll be an Officer, and Officer's don't wear them. You'll get the India Sim right before PPW--I think it's after serving either 90 or 180 days in the Active Duty Army in a time of war.
