I am currenty a junior in high school and have been looking into UT at Austin very seriously. I didn't really see acceptance as a threatening issue, however, recently I have been hearing some scary situations. What are my chances?
GPA: 3.94
ACT: 24
Rank: 11/293
Courses: A couple AP's, Accel.'s, and other difficult ones.
Others: Well over 200 volunteer service hours, National Honor Society, Key Club, Student Council, Youth Ministry, etc.

I have very great contacts for recommendation letters such as mayors, congressman, alumni, etc.

I am a resident of Mississippi, therefore, I'd be out-of-state.

Can anyone please help me?

Also comments on U of Florida, U of Miami, U of Georgia, and UNC Chapel Hill would be greatly appreciated.

You should have no problem making the university itself. Yes you are OOS and yes your ACT is a bit low, but all your other stats are pretty impressive and again getting into the university itself should not be a problem. However, getting into the business school maybe a stretch as even students with a rank as high as yours in-state have difficulties getting into McCombs.

First off, thanks for replying! I'm new to this! I am glad to hear that you think I will be able to get accepted. I'm thinking that I will be able to get my ACT higher considering I will be taking it a good 3 to 4 more times! I am not planning on applying to the college of business. I want to declare pre-med but I'm totally lost as far as a major!?

Try your hand at the SAT - it works well for different people in comparison to the ACT. It can't hurt!

Also - APPLY EARLY!!!! This is the biggest mistake OOSers can make - applying on January 31st when the deadline is February 1st. UT IS ROLLING and it fills up FAST. Get your app in by November.

Pre-med is not a major but you can fulfill pre-med requirements in almost any major I think, but usually students choose a major in the College of Natural Sciences or the Psychology B.S. in the College of Liberal Arts. These two colleges are 2 of the easier ones to get into, and I think held at the same standards?

But if I am trying to fulfill the pre-med requirements, and I'm not in a science related major, does that mean that I would be taking extra courses that I wouldn't need to meet the pre-med requirements? I really do like science, however, it is sounding to me like people who major in other areas, but still are pre-med, have a better chance at getting into med. school. What majors are interesting and closely related to the pre-med requirements but aren't your straight forward science major?? (yes, I know thats a lot of questions!)

Also, I hardly know about research in college, so if anyone could fill me in on what its all about? Cool? Boring? Demanding? Waste?

Do you think that the only opportunity I would have would be in the liberal arts department? I want to declare pre-med and I haven't decided on a major but I didn't see many interesting majors for me in the liberal arts college...
