My son got his acceptance packet and there is an offer to pay for a flight. This is such a great gesture and I wondered how common it is.

Congratulations to your son! Is he a URM? In past years, there have been posts on CC that WUSTL paid for admitted URMs to visit the school.

^and asians, dunno if they count as URMs or not.

FWIW, S got the travel award, too. He’s neither asian, nor URM.

I got one too and I’m white

Hmm. My daughter (not a URM) had an insert in her packet offering a free flight to visit and I just assumed everyone got one ('tho it does seem extravagant if that’s the case). She has not visited and maybe they are one of those schools that tracks who’s been there and who hasn’t and offers a free trip to anyone who hasn’t been on campus. Whatever the case, we’ll be taking them up on it.

i got one too. im a white female and i havent visited yet

I don’t think it depends on whether or not you have previously visited the campus. We visited last summer, yet S got the travel grant. WashU is probably giving this grant to everyone accepted–it does seem extravagant, I agree.

no, from another thread, it’s clear that not everyone gets it. My D’s award came from the school she applied to, not the university as a whole. Is that the common thread? From what it indicated on that letter, they said her application was one of the best they received!! We thought they said that to everyone, until we noticed the free airfare. I don’t think it’s just a stats thing, but truly a holistic review and someone they see as a good fit with the campus culture. That’s my opinion, because on the stats alone, my D has one standout thing, but nothing else that puts her at the top of the heap by any means!

also, she’s a white female and visited already.

interesting marketing attempt by Wash U to increase yield; the campus is beautiful; take them up on their offer; especially for those of you who just applied to Wash U on a whim…

FWIW, this was not common practice two years ago when my daughter was in the process; yes, for certain candidates, but it sounds like everyone received the voucher this year…

in fact, isn’t it true that Wash U does not organize accepted student days at all?

wow, Wash U is not the only school which does this. I know that Williams College pays airfare as well!

I asked for and received a travel grant this fall. I think that’s why I didn’t get one with my acceptance packet.

My S also received a travel grant to visit Washu. White male from Long Island, NY. Never officially visited, though he has slept over twice while visiting other S. Maybe kids with
96+ averages got them

I wonder. I got one but definitly dont have a 96% average. I’m thinking its because I listed them as my top choice for National Merit…

I am a male Asian from upstate NY, expressed no interest whatsoever, and put the least amount of effort into this school out of all my applications. Yet, I got one.

you put the least amount of effort into this school out of all your applications because they only wanted your common app.

I doubt it, since I definitely don’t have a 96+% average. I got an invite though…

I’m wondering whether they offer it to international applicants…

It could be a huge cost

^ they don’t

My son is white and had not visited. When he e-mailed about wishing he could visit in the fall, the admissions office did mention the travel grant. He is a strong academic applicant (no 96%, though, but that would be really rare at his high school). This really will make him take a stronger look at the college.
