I've been assigned to Donner and am looking for more information as I start getting my dorm stuff together. If you've lived there, would you let me know the following? Is there a closet? If so, how big? Are the beds loft style or just regular twins? Will storage boxes fit underneath? Is there a dresser or chest for clothing? Is there room for a small bookcase?

If anyone has pics of a standard double, I'd love to see them.

Thanks!

Closet is “typical” closet width. You can fit your clothes in there if you don’t have a crazy amount. Beds aren’t lofted because Donner has the largest doubles on campus. My bed was raised high enough my minifridge could fit under it. My roommate’s was a little lower, but there’s enough to fit one of those under-bed storage things. Every dorm room, like, ever comes with a dresser. I seem to recall all of the desks coming with a bookcase sort of thing on them.

When moving into a dorm at CMU are you aloud to bring your own bed and desk even though the room already has one it it?

I don’t know anyone at any school that has. If you’re worried about the bed being uncomfortable, get a mattress topper. Just use the desk that comes with the room because they’re purchased to be a size that’ll fit nicely with the other furniture.

No, I’m not worried about the bed not being comfortable. I want to have have a loft bed with a desk under it! Do you if that is or was an option? Thanks again!

That is an option. In most on campus dorms you can ask for your bed to be lofted (and vise versa) to conserve space or if you’re a fan of heights and all :)

In Donner you probably won’t need to loft your bed, honestly. We used to pack 8-10 of us into a room to play games on my little 17" CRT TV, and it wasn’t unreasonable (it was way worse when we did it in Scobell with our lofted beds, lol).

If you do loft a bed on your own you’ll be required to have it inspected by the campus maintenance guys, though. It’s generally easier to have them loft your bed (just be sure to request it early before they run out of loft kits).
