Dorm question

I thought I had seen somewhere that the beds in the dorms are extra-long twin beds, is that right?

Just wanting to be sure we get the right size sheets :). Any tips on finding them at the best price?

Thanks!

They all are extra-long twins except for Sharp, which is regular sized.

Thanks! I appreciate the help.

Another dorm question. Wondering about room dimensions for rug size. What are typical room dimensions in JL? Or, what size rug would fit from just under one bed to just under other bed? (my, how our posts have evolved in the last 6 months…from admissions and scholarships to dorm room questions)

Fun having the questions evolve, isn’t it? As far as typical dimensions, there are none. One of the charming things about JL is that the rooms are quite varied. Here is a link to the floor plan:

http://housing.tulane.edu/images/Floorplans/JL-Floorplan.pdf

Unlike the floor plan for Warren, this one doesn’t show the sinks in the rooms, but many rooms do have their own sinks. After all, who would dare ask a Southern Belle to live in a room without one? Life had to have been so very different back then.

Thanks, fallen. I guess when she gets her room assignment maybe we can figure it out from the floor plan. Or maybe we’ll just get a rug after we get there. From what I’ve read here, sounds like she will for sure be in JL since she put it as her first choice and it isn’t first choice for a lot of girls.

Back in the dark ages when I was in college, all the girl’s dorms at my school had sinks and I was at a state school. I was so surprised that sinks didn’t seem to be the norm at the schools we visited.

Probably a huge maintenance issue, having sinks in every room. I imagine as new dorms were being built from the 60’s on, the cost savings of eliminating that feature was just too great to pass up. Now with more colleges going to the suite style arrangement (usually 4 rooms around a central bath) it seems to be settling in the middle of those two extremes.

BTW, my big complaint about the floor plan is they say 1/8"=1’, but they didn’t put in a standardization bar. So with the scale being off, one cannot really do the dimensions from the floor plan. Bummer. We were also trying to do some planning, but like you looks like we will be making some trips to Target, et. al. after move-in.

Although the JL rooms vary in shape/dimensions, they are all pretty sizeable. I had a rug that was nearly 5 ft by 7 ft that fit in between the two beds in the room, with each bed against the wall in opposite corners. I’m pretty sure this rug would have fit into every room on my floor, even though none of the rooms look exactly the same. If you’re extra curious, I took pictures of my room last year that I would share via PM. JL is pretty nice, despite what everyone seems to say about it :)

Edit: Just remembered there was at least one single room on my floor that was being used as a forced double, i.e. two girls living in a room meant for only one girl. This room was VERY cramped because they were given an extra dresser to compensate for only having one closet, and this extra piece of furniture took up a lot of floor space. I think this was a very unusual circumstance, but it is something to keep in mind, especially given the size of the incoming class.

Does anybody know when we get our dorm assignment?

As best I can recall it was mid-late July last year.

Incoming freshman should find out their housing assignments early next week. We will send out an email to your Tulane email account.

An option that worked out great for S was to order a rug online (Walmart–nothing fancy) and have it shipped to the campus. Tulane had a specific address you could send things to prior to move-in. When we arrived on campus, after moving S into his dorm (Monroe), he walked over to the area where they had set up two large trucks full of stuff, gave them his name, and voila! the 5x7 Walmart rug was handed to him.

For a kid who typically cares not at all about furnishings etc, we were surprised he wanted this dark red rug. But it worked out great in the dorm room, between the 2 beds. He used it for a year or two before it was so gross it had to be thrown away!
