What would they do if they found out you have one?

does each floor have an ra too? or is it by res halls?

Each floor (or house for the older plazas) should have an RA.

They would probably just write you up if they found any prohibited items? At least that's the case with microwaves and stuff.

wiki on halogen lamp safety:
[quote]
Because the halogen lamp operates at very high temperatures, it can pose fire and burn hazards. Additionally, it is possible to get a sunburn from excess exposure to the UV light emitted by an undoped quartz halogen lamp. To mitigate the negative effects of unintentional UV exposure, and to contain hot bulb fragments in the event of explosive bulb failure, manufacturers of lamps intended for general-purpose usage usually install UV-absorbing glass filters over or around the bulb. Alternatively, they may add a coating of UV inhibitors on the bulb envelope that effectively filters UV radiation. When this is done correctly, a halogen lamp with UV inhibitors will produce less UV than its standard incandescent counterpart.

i did get written up for a halogen lamp 1st quarter, they really don't do anything about it, they just tell you that it's not allowed and that you should get rid of it. your RA will come in after a day or so to check up on it and depending on your RA, he/she will give you some kind of advice on how to deal with/dispose of/hide it :)

mine was the cute one from ikea too.

Halogen lamps are lamps that use a really small lightbulb (as opposed to regular larger light bulbs). They aren't allowed in the dorms, though. Stash it in a closet or under the bed for room checks if you really want to bring one. :) Most of the time though, the people who check the rooms won't even notice it if it was just sitting on your desk.

For the phone, one is provided for you in the room, but you don't need to use it or plug it in. Most people use their cell phones. However, calling from room to room is free. So if you are inclined, make everyone on your floor plug it in and you don't have to waste cell phone minutes just calling your friend to come over from down the hall. (But then again, you shouldn't really be that lazy to not just walk).

can we have a desk right in front of the window, or does it absolutely have to be a drawer?

Huh? Furniture arrangement is all up to you and your roommate(s).

At orientation when we stayed at Rieber Vista I noticed that the desks had a keyboard drawer so you didn't have to put it on top of the desk. Are the desks the same in Rieber Hall?

Are you sure that it's a keyboard drawer? I think it's just a plain old drawer to keep stuff in since the board isn't flat. But if you're referring to those, then I think all desks are like that.

hm, I could be wrong, I thought it was more of a slider than a drawer. I didn't really pay much attention though.

In every room I was in last year it was a regular drawer, not a keyboard drawer.

All dorm desks have a flat drawer. It's for both keyboards and stationery.

forget about halogen lamps n their cuteness. They are fire hazard. Think of your safety and the safety of the hundreds of people in your building.

stationary, hah

Hey, Flopsy is a South Campus major.

Cut him some slack :)

Wait... Are you implying that "stationery" was a misspelling?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stationery

Hahahahah.

Know what's sad, too? I was pretty sure flopsy was right, and i typed "stationary" into Blingo to make sure that it was the non-moving sort, and the first 10 that came up were for paper supplies. So I changed my mind.

The lesson? Blingo does not equal dictionary.com. Because no one can spell on teh intranet.

Speaking of Dictionary.com...

Lol, yes. That's what I meant. The internet has it allll wrong. Because I googled and it gave a bad definition. See? Yeah. Oh well.

a semi related set of questions:

i remember the desks having a top part or shelf. is there any way i can have this removed? is there someone i can call to take it away for me or something along those lines?

also, is lofting the beds in a single possible? i think it'd save a lot of space
