I live in Sproul. I love it here, I wouldn't trade it for any other hall if I had the choice (but I don't since I'm assigned to be a Program Assistant at Delta Terrace next year).

It's the most convenient dorm on campus... closest to campus, close to Puzzles, Bruin Cafe, (2 of the 3 late-night eateries on campus and probably the more popular 2), and Covel for food, close to Covel Commons for some discussion sections or tutoring or scholarship resource center, etc., short walk over to De Neve or any of the other halls (only Hedrick is less convenient, but its less convenient for everyone). The lobby floor is renovated so its nice, there's some study rooms on the lobby floor and also a TV room and a piano room (but no entertainment rooms for pool or the like it seems). It's still somewhat social (not quiet like the plazas or sunset), and actually can be pretty social if you live in the higher floors (6th and 7th floor). But like Icarus pointed out, the lounges are used more for studying than socialing. It's mostly second years, but so far I've found them to be nice and helpful, and they don't shun us first years (although some like to isolate themsevles from ANY floor activity whatsoever). I don't feel like first years are outnumbered though. Also, having second years is great because they can give you their advice and share experience. In the words of my mom, living in Hedrick would be like "blind sheep leading sheep." Sproul is also right in front of Sproul Turnaround, which is the rendezvous for rides to off-campus activities, so that's convenient, and the turnaround is also good for loading/unloading during move-in/move-out.

Negatives of Sproul though: probably the most Fire Drills of ALL the dorms. -_- i dont know why, but we usually get around 3-4 of them, at very ungodly hours (3am, 4am, etc), but they're usually in the beginning of the year so its not bad. There's also only one elevator per wing to go up and down so the wait is longer (at Rieber and Hedrick, there's 2 elevators per wing).

HAHA they still have a lot of fire alarms? Bummer lol
We had sooo many last year, but most were because construction set them off at like 6am... then there were a few done by stupid frat kids at ungodly hours of the morning.
Well, I'm going back to Sproul as a SHA next year, back to the good old floor I was on last year (well, the south side... close enough) But yeah, I love Sproul - I agree that its the best on the hill. Dykstra is a close second :)

hey cool. nice advice. i think i might settle for Sproul Hall.. if I get in hahaha. Yeah it sounds very convenient too! Question though, what do u mean by "pretty social"? And also, do you know the chance getting into Sproul? or are u just assigned to a random Res Hall?

pretty social as in people socialize in the lounge, talk to others, know the residents on their floor, doors are open, maybe a party once in a while, etc.

the different between sproul socialness and hedrick socialness is that at hedrick, you have hyper freshmen running around at 3am but you probably wont get that at sproul.

chances for a first year getting sproul is slim. its approximately 90% 2nd-years and 10% first-years... think of it like getting admitted to harvard. jk jk. PM me and ill show you an alternative method (cuz i wasnt originally assigned to sproul).

De Neve = Foothill at Cal. It's quiet. Too quiet. Most of the Res halls are fine though. LoL Westow. I was reading your post.. Sproul Hall? Haha thats the admin building at Cal.

Anyways, my friend at De Neve says he doesn't see his floor much. There's no one ever in the halls, it's kinda sad.

Hey, if you like having your own bathroom, De Neve is a pretty good choice =)

As for lounges, come on. I don't go there to watch TV. I watch in my own room. Unless it's like some away football game that's big. I guess you don't have any of that, but we watched the USC Cal game in our lounge. Group studying takes place there, but its not all that effective. Ummm and what else. Poker games? Haha, don't worry there are enough lounges at UCLA that its fine.

community bathrooms are NEVER full. in fact, i find myself showering, etc. by myself most of the time. its just a natural phenomenon lol. but seriously, community bathrooms are convenient and never a hassle.

disadvantages of private bathrooms:
- need to work out schedule with roommate
- need to find some other bathroom is roommate using it
- if roommate using it late at night when youre studying or early in the morning when you're sleeping it can be annoying
- you need to refill stuff/clean stuff
- if not, then a cleaning lady probably comes into your room
- possiblity of roommate using your stuff since they're left in the bathroom (instead of stored in your room for community)
- they take up space in the dorm room
- you'll never need to get out of your room = less opportunity for socializing... for community, socializing can start even if you go wash your hands, you might meet a floormate in the hall

wait... what do u mean by community bathrooms?? i thought bathrooms in res halls were shared by at most 4 people.. and also, how big are the community bathrooms?

oh... and how many live on a single floor? and also, like a neat freak i am, are the bathrooms CLEAN, as in no foul odors, liquid on the floor. how large are these community bathrooms. and how does showering work?...

Showering works like this: Take off all your clothes. Turn the metallic knob in the red direction, but not too far. Test the water with your hand, but make sure not to burn yourself! Step inside and be cleansed.

LOL - yeah yeah well they're pretty clean for the most part, and if it happens to not be clean at some point, it will be within 24 hours, since the bathrooms are cleaned every day. And as far as showering, there are about 6 showers per bathroom. I've almost never been in there with more than one other person... wow that came out wrong, but I hope you see what I was trying to get at ;) Each shower is its own separate stall and such haha. The showers in Sproul (and I'm assuming Hedrick and Rieber) are pretty cool because they each have their own little changing room thing, whereas Dykstra showers dont' have this. And yes, after you pick a shower, aim78's directions should work nicely :p

Hey kfc4u how do you get into Sproul hall? And also, if I accept my SIR really late, does that mean I get teh left over housing? or is it lottery based? And is there some kind of vaccination shot you have to take before you can dorm? or you only have to take it if you've never had it? what is the disease that you are being vaccinated against?

I'm not kfc but I'll try my best to answer
If you're an incoming freshmen, you don't get to choose which resident hall, you only get to pick (actually prioritize) which type of housing you want to live in (suites, plaza, hall)
Doyou mean submit your housing app really late? I think it's lottery based so you're ok as long as you turn in before the deadline in may.
As for vaccinations, i know they require hepatitus
and recommended for any student living in dorms is meningtitus (sp?)..read about it here on cc - http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?70/81937
