DORMS-Pros/Cons etc...

Hi–
I’d love some information about the different dorm options for freshmen. Pros/Cons and a brief description about the vibe would be great!
Thanks!

Okay, so no response, huh? How about I’ll share my impressions and you all can correct me if I’m wrong and fill in some blanks.
I think all dorms are co-ed, right?

Kohler–Sinks in rooms. Substance free. Is it socially limiting/isolating?

Plantz–Good location. Newly renovated bathrooms. Mostly Con students. Would a non-music major feel left out here?

Coleman–closest to town, furthest from Warch. Houses sorority meeting spaces. Has sinks. So, is this dorm like one big sorority? Is it socially isolating if you are not in a sorority? Am I making too much of this sorority thing?

Ormbsy–Popular with freshmen. Older building, hardwood floors, centrally located on campus.

Sage–Most lively, possible “party” dorm. Closest to fraternities. Is it really loud? Do quieter people hate it here?

Trevor–This is the one I have the most fuzzy impression of. Newer bathrooms, I think.Furthest from town and classes. Is it isolated?

Heitt and themed housing–Not options for freshmen.

Thanks, everyone! Hopefully my being more specific will spark some responses!

@mommy 22 Your impressions are pretty fair except for Colman. My daughter is in Colman for her second year–first year older part, this year new part. The new part does not have sinks but does have carpet and central air  My daughter doesn’t think it’s isolating. She worked in the admissions office last year which is right next door which was handy. She and her roommate are not in a sorority and can honestly say that the meeting room they use will not interfere with living in Colman. Some of the tennis team reside in Colman since the courts are right next door. But it doesn’t matter if you’re not on the team. My daughter’s friend lives in Plantz and is not a music person. She likes it. She was in Ormsby last year, requested it this year, but ended up in Plantz. You never know. They try to balance the dorms by class–except for Hiett. My daughter has a negative impression of Kohler, but every other dorm would be fine. Please assure your son/daughter that there’s a good chance they won’t get their top choice, so they won’t be too disappointed if that happens. I only check this website about once a week, so if you have any questions, please feel free to email.

Forgot to mention that my daughter goes to the YMCA a lot which is close to Colman. The Y has a parking garage and I read somewhere that Lawrence students can park there for a very nominal fee. I haven’t verified this yet but plan to. The Y membership is included in the Lawrence tuition.

I have not checked this website lately either but I also agree with MOMINWIS (hi!!!). Your student will fill out a pretty lengthy survey this summer that will match them with a roommate and ask them their preferences with dorms. Lawrence is small and personalized so it seems they try to take care to match people. Even if you are in Trevor, the campus is so small, I can’t imagine it would be too isolating. After freshman year it is a lottery system so, yeah, you might not get your first choice, but you are with friends by then so it all works out.

Just as an update: My daughter lives in Trever, loves it, and loves her randomly-selected roommate!

@mommy22 Any tidbits on Kohler? DD is interested in substance free.
