Dorms!

ismash, yes you can fill it out earlier. I did my housing before I paid my deposit.

Thanks Versii. I asked because I’m most likely heading to BU but i can’t say for certain yet. So just in case I do, I want to fill out the housing survey as soon as possible first and not pay the deposit. Filling out the housing survey doesn’t mean I’m definitely attending BU right?

Your housing survey won’t be looked at until you pay the deposit. I mean, they won’t assign you into a room if they’re not sure you’ll attend.

yea thats what i was thinking. I just want to fill it out now just in case I do decide to go since i heard the housing was first come first serve?

First come first serve based on when you pay your deposit.

Can anyone talk about myles a little? Is it a fun/social/quiet/clean/nice/wild place for an incoming freshman?

Myles is quiet and antisocial. Not an ideal place for freshmen, unless that’s what you’re looking for.

So I have severe reactive asthma/ allergies to carpets since they collect a lot of dust ect;. I had to get a doctors note to send to BU, and BU basically told me that there’s a strong chance I’d be put in one of the brownstones since it is the only option that has select rooms with wood floors. Although the brownstones are aesthetically great, I’m not thrilled since I can’t have that social freshman dorm experience. That said, are there any specialty houses on Baystate road that might be good for finding SOME sense of community? I saw that there was a music house, but I’m not huge into drugs/drinking, and feel that that may be prevalent in a music specialty house.
Also, are there some Baystate brownstones that aren’t specialty houses at all, or are they all specialty houses?

There are some non-specialty brownstones. Generally, specialty houses are more social. A friend of mine lived in the Common Ground house as a freshman and she loved it. The residents were all really close and she didn’t regret not living in Warren even though that’s what she had originally wanted.

Towers West doesn’t have carpets, although I’ve heard it’s getting renovated this summer.

Yeah, I originally wanted Towers west, but apparently along with the renovations they’re installing carpets, lol. Just my luck, right?

which dorms would be most convenient for a student in the college of engineering? on that topic, where are most freshman classes?

The School of Engineering is on the street behind Warren Towers (Cummington St.) so that would be convenient. It isn’t very far from Towers or HoJo either though. I’d recommend Warren if you want a typical freshman dorm. I’m not in ENG, but I’d guess that most of your classes will be basic requirements in CAS, discussions and classes on Cummington, and science classes/labs in the Metcalf Science Building which is right nearby too. For anyone not in CGS/CFA/SHA, basically all your classes tend to be around central/slightly east campus. You will occasionally get a class in some random building though that’s a little bit further. It’s hard to predict, but avoiding far east & far west would be your best bet.

thank you. but when you say far west, what do you mean? would west campus and 1019 commonwealth be in that category?

Yes, that’s as far as BU’s campus goes West. They’re about 15-20 minutes walking away from where the majority of your classes will be. Danielsen would be far east. No other BU buildings are as far out as Danielsen, which is about 15 minutes east of Warren. You can take the BUS though but it’s often crowded and/or not on time.
