Double Majoring at Columbia

Hi, I'm considering applying to Columbia this fall. I know that Columbia has a very strenuous and diverse core curriculum. Is it still possible/realistic to double major at the College with all the other courses one must take? I'm considering a double major in Theatre Directing (through Barnard) and Sociology or Urban Studies. Thank you!

same here, I was wondering if I could doouble major in creative writing and marketing/advertising with a minor in Spanish. I guess we should both email Columbia’s admissions, hopefully they’ll answer :)

It’s possible. I know somebody who’s double majoring in physics and in theater. Difficult, but possible. writercolumbia - you should note that you can’t major in marketing/advertising, at least in Columbia College.

Yes, double major or major/concentration are possible and I think are not uncommon. If I am not mistaken you classes are: 1/3 major, 1/3 electives, 1/3 core, so plenty of opportunities to double-major.

mrbc- Really, Seriously, I really wanted to major in marketing/advertising. Now I need to pick something different. How about business or entrepreneur?

What’s the difference:)?

I don’t know really, I just want to pick something that has to do with bussiness. :/

WriterColumbia - here’s the list of majors:
[Majors, Concentrations, and Programs of Study | Columbia College](Majors, Concentrations and Other Programs of Study | Columbia College)

there is a business major, which is kind of cool because it’s in collaboration with the Business School:
[Business | Columbia College](<a href=“Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University”>Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University)

I realized I should clarify - business isn’t a major, it’s a “special concentration,” and you have to apply for it. But it’s there. And you could definitely do it alongside your creative writing major.

FYI, the business concentration is new (I’m pretty sure it was announced earlier this year), so it’s not going to have the track record that more established business programs have.

Double majoring is entirely possible, but it does require planning ahead. You definitely won’t be able to take as many electives as people with just one major. I’m not familiar with either of the majors you mentioned, but the first thing I’d do is to check the department webpage and see how many credits each majors requires. Keep in mind that Columbia doesn’t allow you to count the same class twice for two different concentrations/majors (e.g., if both of your majors require a stats class, you’ll have to take two different ones). However, you are allowed to count some Core classes toward your major (what I like to call the “Core of the Core” - i.e., LitHum, CC, Music Hum, etc - generally can’t be counted for anything else, but Global Core classes can be counted towards your major).

There’s no marketing/advertising or business major at Columbia College. It’s a liberal arts college, so you have to actually study something. The school is very opposed to pre-professionalism, and that brand-new “special concentration” in business management is very controversial.

thank you! yeah i was looking at it, i think to ease the load if i went i would take a couple summer classes. Barnard’s Theatre major is about 13 courses and Columbia’s Sociology is 36 units… so like 9-12 courses depending on the electives you take. i did the math, and with a possible 40 classes taken (assuming 5 a semester) i may be able to skate by in four years. are there any core classes offered during summer (like art or music hum)

OP, it’s definitely possible to double-major in theatre and sociology over four years. By you own math, your major will require around 25 courses, leaves you 15 courses for electives and the Core. The Core is LitHum, CC, ArtHum, MusicHum, FroSci, UWriting, plus 2 science courses, and 2 Global Core classes. Global Core might overlap with Sociology electives, but even it if doesn’t, that’s only 10 Core classes. You still have room for 5 electives. (I’m not counting P.E., since you should be able to easily add that on to any semester in which you take 5 real classes). And if you’re worried that’s too restrictive, don’t be afraid to concentrate in Sociology instead of majoring in it.
