i got placed into english 005
is this good or bad?
if you guys dont mind me asking, what classes did you get put into

i also got placed into English 005.

Meaning that you did not pass the Writing Requirement if you took the placement test. i was informed that it is due to the fact that they weren’t sure about your writing ability. English 005 is like a stepping class to the regular English 1A that most incoming freshmen enter. you’ll only be behind for a quarter, i think?

There has been so many eng5 threads lately. :\ Note to everyone: please read through other posts before posting your question.

This is the level of eng classes: bswt3, eng4, eng5 + eng 1pa, eng1a, eng1b, eng1c

You must take eng 5 and eng1pa together in order for it to count as your eng1a requirement. Eng1a is the typical starting point for most students.

So if I’m in ENGL4… am I 2 quarters behind ENGL 1A?

Not really. eng5 + eng1pa = eng1a

you are only one quarter behind.

eng 4 and eng 5 are the same

1pa is a substitute of 1a with 5( i heard differently Jenuwin you take 1pa as a single class)

Eng 4 and Eng 5 are not the same.

According to classes.ucr.edu, 1pa is a single class.

ENGL 01PA Beginning Composition: Intensive, 4 units, Lecture, 3 hours; tutorial, .5 hours; extra writing and rewriting, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): an appropriate score on the University of California Analytical Writing Placement Exam; consent of the Director of the University Writing Program; **concurrent enrollment in ENGL 005L. **

But I did find out that you if you’re placed in…
Eng5 (NOT eng5L) –> concurrent enrollment in ENGL 005D or ENGL 005L is required.

Um, I’m pretty confused myself… but I guess there IS a difference between being placed in Eng5 and Eng5L.

okay here’s the deal with 1PA.

first english 4 means that you’re not ready to move on to English 1A.
english 5 is that you are close but have stuff to work on
This is why they have the option for 1PA. 1PA is = English 1A
BUT you have to have a credit or no credit one unit course that people in English 4 and 5 have to take. and when I took 1PA also a 30 min session with a TA each week.

Benefit of doing 1PA is that it puts you on track with everyone else meaning the winter you can go ahead and take English 1B assuming you pass.
Otherwise you will still have to take english 5 another quarter and will be behind 2 quarters if you happen to fail.
