Downtown Restaurants recommendations

I’m taking my son for a visit/tour this weekend. Because we are from out of state, can anyone recommend a downtown restaurant? If you are a student, what is your favorite place to eat in town? I’ve noticed there seem to be several local places like, Dave’s Downtown Tavern, Cally’s Restaurant & Brewing Co., Artful Dodger, Downtown 56, el Charo, etc….. I’d love some suggestions!

I never heard of these. Frankly, everytime we go we eat at the same 3 places. My son is happy because he loves a good steak, but would probably not spend his money to buy it ;). We go to the Outback, or someother steak chain (I don't recall the name, but when you are near the school if you drive around you'll probably see it. Its the Texas something (maybe Texas Roadhouse, but this is a wild guess). Frankly, we prefer the chain restaurants since we could not find another type of restaurant in the area that we liked. There is an Italian restaurant on one corner (sorry, again, I don't have a name). We had one great meal there, and the last time it was just okay. My son's favorite place on his budget is Buffalo Wild Wings, also known as "B Dubs". He belongs to a campus club which also allows some sort of discount there-Picture a cross between fast food and a sportsbar (can't really call it fast food because they have tables, and menus, and you wait, but it is mainly chicken wings with various sauces).

I'm a freshman at JMU...whenever my parents or my roomate's parents come we eat at Cally's, it's really good :)

Artful Dodger is really popular with the students but I think it's more for like, getting coffee or tea and little stuff and hanging out. It's a really cool place though. B Dubs/Buffalo Wild Wings is directly across from the quad (not downtown) and is also really popular with the students for wing night, it's more casual. But for a nice dinner I say Cally's! Have fun!

There are also a few new restaurants downtown -- I am afraid I cannot remember the name of the newest one -- it is right by Dave's Taverna directly across from the Library. It is VERY Good... Cally's and Daves are also very good.

My D and I ate at Dave's - had good souvlaki grilled chicken. She's a vegetarian and they had several good choices for her.
