Any truth to the stereotypes that Cornell's a suicidal icebox?

haha I know it's not that extreme but still, I don't get the impression that it's a very happy place, am I right?
And is it as cold as they say?

The suicide rate is actually slightly below the national average.

The weather is typical Northeast weather. I've lived in both the Midwest and in Ithaca and I think I prefer Ithaca weather.

the best part about ithaca winters is walking to class while its snowing

a little corny and cliche, but cornell literally becomes a winter wonderland :) and it is gorgeous

Most of the people who complain about Ithaca weather are from California or the South. Ithaca weather isn't really all that special in the North East, and really isn't that bad compared to places like Chicago.

Our first clue as to where norcalguy attends med school!

Well, I actually grew up in Ohio. So, before I was Norcalguy, I was MidwestGuy.

The weather and the workload are as challenging as any Ivy. And it's been known for generations as a unfriendly, minimally-social place, mostly because it's such a segmented/cliquey/niche-based place. But it's not any drearier or suicidal than any other top school.

I find the winter weather in Ithaca to be pretty exhilarating at times.

I wouldn't describe Cornell as either unfriendly or minimally socially. While the campus does have its various niches, its far from unfriendly or unsocial.

Cornell is a winter WONDERLAND right now!

(except....the footpaths on the Arts Quad are really dirty snow, and that brick crosswalk from like, Rockefeller to past Goldwin is partly submerged under brownish water...gross..)

And it's a VERY fun place to be!!!!!

And thank goodness it is, because around Ithaca there is absolutely NOTHING.

(Unless you count Spencer-VanEtten as something.....if you do...I can only pray for you)

But no, really, Cornell is NOT cold and dreary. I would say it's nippy and f uckawesome.

Is norcal guy at CaseWestern?

Hey. Jeff Foote is from Spencer-VanEtten!

$20 (to a current Cornellian) or automatic acceptance to Cornell (for an applicant) for the person who correctly discovers where norcalguy attends medical school :P

Life history goes Ohio-->California-->Cornell-->Washington DC (NIH)-->Med School

So, the med school is not necessarily in Ohio or even the Midwest.

I'm very secretive about my med school whereabouts due to anonymity issues (med school classes are small, there's only a handful of Cornell students in my class, and each med school class has its own Facebook group). If you knew my med school, you can instantly narrow me down to one of only 2 or 3 people. Not that anyone really cares to try to look me up on facebook but just in case.

Well. We know it's a "Top 20" med school. And we know it's not WashU, because I think he referenced something about not getting in there at some point. And now I know it's probably not Weill-Cornell because there would be more than a handful of Cornellians at Weill-Cornell.

If I ever spent any time on the med school message boards, maybe I could figure it out. But I see enough doctors in real life already, and just recently had a medical student break up with me, so I'm not too keen to hang around more medics. That said, my doctors tell me I know more about autoimmune problems than their students, so maybe there's a doctor in me yet, even if I could never make it through the hazing and pointless credential seeking process known as med school and residency.

My hunch is either Emory or UCSD.

I'm going with either UCSF or Stanford

Anyway...I can understand the anonymity issues...it's all good :)

Med school admissions is bad enough....I'm not looking forward to med school...provided, of course, that I get in somewhere!

Wow. If Norcalguy was at UCSF I would be impressed. I guess the world will never know.

I'm so not anonymous.

I've narrowed it down to six schools.

All are in the top 20 of med schools, and all participate in the AAMC background check service with Certiphi:

UPenn
UCLA
UMich-Ann Arbor (which norcalguy was deferred from)
UChicago
Vanderbilt
Northwestern

:)

anyone want to do some detective work on those three? I'm hunching on Vanderbilt.

lol how did this get so off topic.

Don't blame me. I was offering my expert weather opinions.

To poke holes in chendrix's logic, I was accepted to at least one of the schools on his list (hence a background check was automatically performed) but it doesn't mean that I ended up going to one of those schools.

At least you know I go to a top med school (probably from me bragging about it so much).

@norcalguy: I don't think any of us are such creeps that we would come looking for you even if we were to try finding you, and not just where you go to school
(Also, do you know what you want to specialize in?)

@ all: Were any of you sincerely offended by my use of ... colorful language? It's a habit, and I've always felt it's not behavior to be censored (hence, my circumventing of their filter)

If you weren't, then I'm impressed by the amount of free time moderator "Amistad" has.
