Dress Code

I am rather unclear about this. I am going to Loomis in the fall, and I know it has a "casual" dress code, but there is no denim allowed, nor T-shirts, sneakers, etc.

Even if you don't go to Loomis, but go to a school with a "casual" dress code:

1) Do these rules generally only apply during classes?
2) Will new students recieve a packet in the mail that explains the dress code in depth?

You can ask Loomis for their dress code now to help you with your shopping.

From the student handbook:

Classroom dress

The standard during all school appointments when classes are in session, during lunch (except Sundays and Week II Saturdays), at away games (for spectators), and on certain occasions as required by the person(s) in charge:

Girls:

Blouses, tops or collared shirts (no T-shirts)

No athletic clothes, including sweatshirts, sweatpants and yoga or dance pants.
No strapless dresses or strapless tops

Dresses, skirts, long pants, shorts or Bermudas (no blue or black denim)
Shoes, sandals, loafers or sneakers

So, for clarification, during the class day you can't wear T-shirts, denim, etc., but you can wear sneakers and, of course, flip flops are ubiquitous! There are formal dress requirements for family style dinners (on Tuesdays and Thursdays), and then at other times (that is to say, not the class day and not formal occasions), you wear what you like "within the bounds of good taste and propriety" as they say in the handbook.

Hi Smile Dog

Would you mind posting the boy's dress code? I'm trying to figure out what S needs to take to Loomis.

Lexima

Sure thing.

Classroom Dress:

Boys

Shirts with collar or turtleneck (no T-shirts)

No athletic clothes, including sweatshirts and sweatpants

Long or short pants (no blue or black denim)

Shoes, sandals, loafers, or sneakers

Formal Dress:

sports jacket or suit coat
High collared turtleneck or dress shirt and tie
Slacks, suit pants or Bermudas
Shoes, sandals, loafers or sneakers

So, most boys wear polo shirts and casual pants (cargo pants are fine) during the class day. Again, recreational dress (that is, what the kids wear when they don't have on classroom dress and it's not a formal occasion) is "Personal choice within the bounds of good taste and propriety." This past year there was a rule against "hoodies" (those sweatshirts with hoods), and it caused some kids a GREAT deal of angst! I'm not really sure what's happening with that rule for this coming year, but it's probably best to assume it's still in force.

SmilePup2 also tells me that boys were allowed to wear T-shirts for classroom dress as long as they had a nice sweater over them; I imagine the same would hold true for the girls.

smile dog, thanks! That was very helpful.

S is a T-shirt and hoodies guy so we'll be buying lots of polos and sweaters. Have a great summer!

what about the phillips exeter dress code? like, it says not shirts with brand names/words, and collered shirts, but what if i wore, like, one of those shirts with pictures on them from delia's or something over a polo?
