Dressing Young (Part 1)

I wish I could find a tankini with boy shorts. I really like the boy shorts for reasons of modesty (i.e. I’d like them even if I still weighed 108 lbs.)

Jym626- If the top overlaps the bottom, they are no more revealing than a one-piece. An added benefit: different sizes on top and bottom, if needed.

missypie,

There are separates out there that include boy shorts, they are just not as common. I bought black boy shorts from one source and wear them with a tankini top I bought elsewhere.

I can find the separates online and in catalogues but I hate to order without trying on. It’s so hard to find anything at stores.

I tried on one of those swim skirts last year. The way it hit me mid-thigh added about 15 lbs - I’d be better off showing the thighs that I have.

I just received a swim skirt from Athleta; it hits about where a 1-inch inseam would hit…just covers a bit of the upper thigh that would be exposed by the bottoms.

I hear you about ordering online. I have already returned 3 pieces I ordered on online. I don’t live in a shopping mecca, so this is the way I go to have options. It’s that or travel 3 hours to Chicago.

Funny, how we are all different. For me, the swim skirts take off 15 lbs, but the boy shorts add at least 20. Something about how they hit my INNER thigh. (Can you have muffin top on your inner thigh??)

See, that’s why I’m reluctant to order online - one never knows how something will fit or whether it will flatter or make matters worse!

I await the day where you can try out clothes online using 3D projection technology.

VeryHappy,
I am very cheap. But, you are right to some degree, I am wearing my junior pants today and they are very very comfy, I can eat as much as I want whole day, they do not cut into my stomach.

MiamiDAP, it’s a lesson I learned a long time ago – to only buy things I love.

VH - I agree. I used to buy clothes just because they were cheap. I cleared my closet last month, and out went the skirts and the shirts that became too loose for me. Since I needed some to replace what did not fit, I went shopping. I spent $200 on a skirt (), but I do not regret it because I will get a lot of mileage out of this skirt: well-made, classic pencil skirt design, nice fabric, not made in China, does not wrinkle, does not ride up or fall down, and it fits me as if it was tailored for my body! The only drawback is that DH now calls me “devil” . If I wear this skirt 50 times (and I will since I already wore it 4 times), it is $4 per wear, like buying a latte at Starbucks every now and then, yet it means fewer garbage in landfills and is better for my waistline!

3D projection tech… Wu, you are onto something! Even when I’m shopping at the mall, I hate trying clothes on because it means constant dressing and undressing, but if we had a virtual fitting room, I’d be all over that! Maybe that’s where the infamous TSA full body scanners will be useful - a body scanner at every Macy’s :)!

BB-
where did you find your miracle skirt? I would like to find a few pieces of each type that fit well and last. I would still want to have many summer tops because it gets so darn hot and humid here-- I would need more than a few unless I do laundry more frequently than environmentally prudent.

Was it on this thread that someone recommended Not your Daughters Jeans? I made the mistake of trying on a pair and they were so comfortable and looked great! I’ve never spent that much on jeans before! On the other hand I got two sweaters that had been marked down and then got an extra 25% off. I love both of them.

mafool - found it at a Nordstom Rack, as usual (yup, it is a Prada!) Can’t find any pictures of it on the web, so I think it must be from the last year’s collection or something like that. Sometimes people buy stuff at Nordy’s, never wear it, and take it back - Nordy accepts returns no matter how long ago they’ve been purchased. It usually ends up at the Rack.

Psst, mathmom, check Nordstrom Rack - they usually have NYD Jeans for $30-50.

I have two pairs of Not Your Daughters Jeans, skinny jeans in black, and they are by far my favorite pants. Pretty much I just wear those now, unless I need something dressier. I have other NYDJ, but each style fits differently and it’s the black ones I like the best. I have found two pairs at Nordstrom Rack.

I found a black wool designer jacket at the Rack that had been altered and then returned. It was an amazing markdown, I think $300 down to $70, and it fits me like it was altered just for me!

Nordstrums takes back things that have been altered? I’m amazed.

Not sure if their return policy has changed in the last decade, but there was a famous Seattle reporter who came into the store with a new shirt (brand not carried by Nordstroms) and explained that he was there from out of town and the new shirt didn’t fit and could they help him… Nordstrom’s salesperson took the other shirt as a trade (must have been somehow in the computer or a code to allow a certain brand as trade…) and fit the guy into a nice shirt for the “meeting”.
Customer service has long been their brand denominator.

Of course, I’m kind of old school, remembering when the department store was Nordstom Best ([Company History - Nordstrom](http://about.nordstrom.com/aboutus/companyhist/companyhist.asp))

and we made fun of the girls in our class with their “Best” waffle-stompers… like they were too good to shop at REI

OMG - another “old school Seattle” thread" … didn’t mean to do that

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but I’m told there’s an iphone app that lets you see how clothes look on a model your size.

I cannot recall the last time I bought jeans or bathing suit other than Loehman’s

Wow, bookworm, thanks for the tip! I had to look that up - we have a Loehman’s here in WA? Amazingly, I did not know that we did!
