re: Uggs -
My 76 yo mother wears them with a Northface puffer! My D would forbid that look on me, but thinks it’s cute on grandma :)

OK…so D is a sr and we’re going to the beach for her class trip over spring break. I haven’t been to the beach in a while, so I’m uncertain what 40+ moms wear. I wear a 2 and workout daily; however, I do NOT want to embarass my D around her friends and other parents. Suggestions? One piece? Tankini? Modest 2 piece?

Where’s the beach? Florida, Maui, etc?

Oh dear I wished I had read this before I ordered a bunch of stuff of J Jill online. I was looking for vacation clothing and thought they looked suitable. Bleh.

I guess I can always give them away.

or you can return them for the correct sixe, Munchkin (not that I have any sort of objection to donations!)

I showed the J Jill stuff to a friend and she said “that’s why I love that store.” So now I get it.

Hmom5 - I’m with you on J Jill. I don’t find it flattering at all. The clothing looks lovely in the window of our local store, but it just doesn’t fit me. Well, it is good we have so many options. By the way, have you moved yet? I think that is what started this thread.

I find that J Jill is hit or miss. I am very fair skinned and live in a beach community. In summer I like to buy whatever version of the linen camp shirt J Jill has. I buy it in a L or XL and wear it at the beach to keep my upper body covered. It does a decent job of an extra layer of sun protection but it is not heavy or close fitting. Some years I like the shirt and other years I tolerate it. It is the best that I have found for the purpose. If I was wearing it as a top with jeans or shorts I would want a more fitted top but for the beach loose works. I also found last summer a pair of linen shorts that are longer. They fit well and as I get older they cover more of my leg. I used to mainly wear J Crew shorts in the summer. (After reading this thread I bought for the first time the longer length shorts from J Crew for my winter vacation). I also have a couple of cotton cardigans that don’t run large. I find for my skin tone their color palette just washes me out.
Also as far as fit. I have 2 friends who have part time jobs at J Jill. One of them is 5ft6 in tall and 100 lbs. She finds clothes at J Jill that fit her. Most of the stuff swims on her but she has been able to piece together some really cute outfits. My other friend is almost 6 ft tall and extremely slender. She finds the clothes to not fit her at all. The arms are all too short. Their tanks with spandex work well under sweaters.

^^^mom60, you’ve got to quit hanging out with such slim friends. 5foot 6inches tall and only 100 pounds?? Wow. Just wow.

I don’t know whether to post this here or on the Deal of the Day thread.

I just bought a bathing suit at Costco. COSTCO!

It is a Speedo: surplice top, x-back, with support on top. It actually fits and it looks good. (Husband, who must be going blind: “You look better than a woman your age has any business looking.”) It cost $20.00 and will be perfect for swimming and body surfing in Lake Michigan. I will still look for and purchase something with a bit style and coverage of that upper thigh area and will probably spend 4 or 5 times as much for something far less practical.

Well, I got my $16 tankini (no shipping) top from Amazon and I love it…plus it goes great with my black boy shorts. So I got another (in a different style) for the same price and it’s dark navy with a nice print…and I like it even better. I’ll keep both. But now I need navy boy shorts. This is getting expensive…

Mafool - I bought a $20 bathing suit last year at Costco and LOVE it! Actually I love the tankini top but not the bottom, so I just wear it with a different bottom. For $20 I’ll take it!

The only bad part was walking out of the store with that darn thing, they have them “hung” on those big plastic pseudo-bodies…it was like walking out with a mannequin!

Justamom, I bought the tankini, too, but the bottom is too low for this 55 year-old. I was going to return it–maybe I should keep it for the top?

The check out person asked me if I wanted the plastic body. I was only too happy to let them keep i!

Mafool, now that’s a great husband!

Worknprogress, yes I’ve moved to CA and boy do women dress younger here! I was in NYC last week wearing skinny jeans, slouchy boots and a cashmere duster, conservative compared to what I can wear in our new community, and a friend told me she liked my outfit–and then threw in that it was a lot like what the teens wear! Backhand compliment?

But I love it. It’s made me step up the ab flattening and healthy eating!

I think I posted earlier in this thread about liking the tankini’s with the skirt…but the skirt with this one wasn’t long enough to cover my rear! So…I just wear the tankini top with a pair of navy blue or black running shorts. I can work in the garden, then jump in the pool. For that price I don’t care if it gets dirty!!

Reporting from the beaches of Maui. Everyone and their mother wears a two piece suit: bikini, tankini, whatever. Age and body do not matter! DH bought me a new swim suit from the local Tommy Bahama store as an early Valentines day gift: cute skirt and a undrewire bra top that supports my upper body anatomy well. A word of warning about skirted suits - when the skirt gets wet, it clings to your body and does not look as good as it looked in the fitting room. It also gets in the way if you try to swim fast or chase after fish with your underwater camera. Not the best suit design for an active person, but it works great for strolling on the beach or lounging by the pool :)

^I would not wear 2 piece under any conditions. My belly is bad after having child at 40, even though I am normal weight for my height and have flat belly because of exercising 2 hours/day. I will let others to enjoy showing off, not me. We are going to Cozumel almost every year, everybody is wearing whatever they want, a lot of Europians at our hotel, all wear different suits. I like very plain suits without padding/underwire because of snorkling. These plain suits are hard to find, sometime I just cut padding out, sometime I ruin brand new suits. The best ones for my purpose are at Sam’s club and Costco, and they have 2 peice also.

Yeah, it seems like the cute suits with skirts or boy shorts have a bra top. When a 108 pound woman bears an 11 pound baby, the belly that is returned to her should never see the light of day again. I had this idea that I would have it cosmetically repaired when I was 40…well that was 11 years ago and as the years go by it seems more and more ridiculous to spend a fortune out of pocket on major surgery so that a woman over 50 can show her belly!

So I’m confused - are these $20 suits at Costcos one-piece or two piece?

I wish there was more of the “choose the top you like” and then “choose the bottom you like” in stores. I know you can do that through Lands End etc., but I really prefer to see the suit in front of me and try it on that way as well.

abasket, you can also do that at J. Crew. In their catalog, at least; not sure about their stores.
