Dressing Young (Part 1)

How do you try on stuff at Costco? I never like to buy something without trying it on.

abasket,
I believe, they have both, one piece and two piece, I am not sure about price, but they are not as heavily padded, I like them. It is almost impossible to find non-padded, but Lands End might actually have them. They are ususally very expensive there. I am doen with at least couple suits during summer, no matter if I pay $20 or $100, they are finished after being in chlorine for hours. So I buy $20 and I believe that they are Speedo at Costco. I am interested only in on-piece, though.

jym626,
You cannot try at Costco, but you can return.

^^ Thanks, Miami. I know that. Its just inconvenient.

Lands End, Athleta and Speedo have non-padded suits.

I hear you about wanting a place to try on separates. I bought two bargain basement tankini tops from Amazon and I love them both. But one is navy and I don’t have bottoms. Ordered some boy shorts from Zappos and I hate them. I just ordered another pair of short inseam board shorts
they look really cute online but who knows if they’ll fit?
I will NOT bare my stomach. I see too many women who really should think about this before they decide
there’s NO reason to let it all hang out IMO. Now the few that can get away with it
more power to them. I’m envious
but then again, they probably work VERY hard to get that way.

^^I’m envious of my oldest D who gained 75 pounds when pregnant, lost it within 2 months and got her flat (almost concave) stomach back without working out, just working hard at her job. She needed surgery after the baby was born and made sure the incision was below her bikini line. She’s lucky she got her dad’s family genes in that zone.

I lost all my weight and got my tummy to be flat again, but there is no non-surgical fix for the stretched/damaged skin.

I lost all my weight after my last baby and my tummy is flat and I do not have stretch marks. But it is ugly after second child at 40. Bikini is out of question also because of age. I am completely OK with all of what I have, tummy, age, one-piece suits, nothing bothers me in this area, it is just the way it is. I am more fit than in my 20s, exersizing more every year, increasing swimming distances, weights in gym. But I do not look 20 and I do not have any plans to change it. I am also OK with people who want to look much younger. That is what they enjoy, why not?

Jcrew has suits that aren’t padded.
I try on stuff at Costco ( tops only), by wearing a gym style top ( thin strap- shelf bra), under my clothes, and take stuff over to a mirror to try on.
Pants they often don’t have in my size anyway.

I don’t like one piece suits- not comfortable- hard to put on, hard to take off. I can find stuff that fits me much better if I wear a tankini style.
Love jcrew- lots of colors and styles to mix and match. ( plus they have d cup!)

It’s fine that people want to look younger, but the problem often (not always) is that in their efforts to look younger, they actually wind up looking older. Examples: middle-aged women in too-tight/revealing clothing meant for teens, men with combovers, etc. However, if you’re talking about someone with a good figure wearing an outfit such as the one hmom5 described above (skinny jeans, boots, etc.), I’m all for it. I just wore that myself yesterday. :)

My aunt wore a flowered, strapless sun dress to my wedding
the type of dress that would look adorable on a 17 year old. She actually had the figure for it
but with her 50 year old face and neck, the effect was rather gruesome.

My favorite outfit this winter? Dark skinny jeans, high black suede boots, long cardigan black sweater over a fitted black v-neck top, with a cool black belt. Hides my big butt - but shows off the lower cut jeans
lol. I sometimes pair it with a long scarf
you know the kind you fold over and then drape around your neck. I have one with peace signs that I really like. What WILL I do this summer? ( I need to lose some weight!)

I enjoy dressing for summer better than winter. I am so cold natured that I have to pile on layer after layer. Plus I hate closed toed shoes.

I love summer clothe better also. The reason: I cannot wear pants in summer, they make me too hot. I wear only dresses / skirts to work in a summer, so much easier and comfortable and less clothe alltogether. But that would be too cold for winter.

I finally received my order. All the clothes fit except for one fitted jacket. I didn’t find sizes too large. I ordered about 6 pairs of pants/capris and about 6 tops, some of them knits. One pair of fitted pants actually felt slightly snug. I usually like my warm/hot weather travel clothing to be loose fitting.

My body type is of the under tall for my weight variety to put this in context.

I take issue that a 50 year old woman with a good body looked “gruesome” in a strapless dress. I obviously didn’t see her, but I would expect this to be a description of a 90 year old in skimpy attire. What are we supposed to do? Break out the turtlenecks and long sleeves? I’m not ready to retire pretty clothes - are they only meant for the very young?

I recently wore a strapless gown to a gala - nothing low cut, but it did show my upper back and arms. I work out and I’m more toned than most people half my age. Several people told me that I looked fantastic. So there - 50 and fabulous!

The key was that it was a very “young” dress
pastel flowers
like maybe a girl would buy at a store like 5-7-9. She would have looked just as gruesome in a long sleeved turtleneck dress that was purchased at a store meant for 17 year olds.

Sounds like it would have been inappropriate for a 30-year old as well as a 50-year old.

You got it. I was 31 at the time and my “going away” dress was a lot more sophisticated than my aunt’s dress. My point is that just because you can fit into it doesn’t mean you should wear it. A 50 year old may have the figure to look smashing in a fitted t-shirt. But that doesn’t mean she should wear a fitted tee that says “I [heart] Vampires” or “Girls Rule.”
