Driving

haha suburbia

i can get a permit at 16, then need 20 hrs of certified instruction with a school and a 5 hr class to get the license at 17.

I'm almost 18, i got my permit 2 weeks ago and am taking my road test on monday, I will probably not drive again for like a year.

In MA you get your permit at 16 so you can drive as long as a licensed adult >18 is next to you. After you do 6 hours of "classroom" and 6 hours of on-the-road instruction, you can take your driving test (as long as you're 16 1/2). Pass, and you can drive yourself and any immediate family member (NO friends) from 6AM-12PM. 17 and you can drive anyone with the same hour restrictions as 16 1/2, and 18 you can do everything.

Ontario- Canada

16- G1 (Written Test) You have to drive with someone that has G2
16 3/4- G2 Driving Test (On road) You Can drive by yourself.
17 1/2- G2 Full (All prividlesges granted)

I thought it was 30 hours in the classroom for MA? Everyone I know who has gone through the MA process has taken 30 hours, whether it's spread out over a month or compacted into a vacation week.

It FREAKS ME OUT to imagine that most of the students in my old high school know how to drive. I've taken a ride with one of them and he was playing with the steering wheel. Terrifying indeed. No wonder that studies have shown that the teenage age group was responsible for the most driving accidents of any age group. I am definitely in support of raising the minimum driving age and I am not planning to drive until the summer before graduate school, when my parents are literally going to force me on the driver's seat.

I actually don't mind Michigan's driving program,

14 and 8 months you can take driver's ed and get a permit
16, you can drive except between 12 and like... 5 or something
17, if you have a license, you can automatically drive anytime

In MI, you can get your learners at 14 and 9 months. I got mine when I turned 15, and I'm getting my "real" license in 2 weeks. :) The only restriction on the 16 yo license is that you can't drive between 12 and 5. But I think the general rule is that as long as you're going home (not going TO a party) then you're fine.

PA driver here.

Turned 17 in late 07/2005.

Recieved learner's permit the day after 16th birthday, and got license two weeks b4 my 17th birthday. PA laws aren't that strict, but my parents are. Still can't drive alone, but I'm being patient.

Can't say the laws in my state are unusual. They still bother me though. Why write tickets for victimless "crimes" like not wearing a seatbelt?
