Dropping a Class before Transfering

Currently I am in my last semester of a cc. Ia m taking Calc 2, but its kicking my butt. I am thinking about dropping it and taking a W. But on the class update i posted to the UCs, I told them i would take it in Spring. Not sure what i should do, If i continue with this class I would probably end up with a D or a F. Do you guys think its possible to drop this class then take another late start class so i can maintain 60 transferable units?

Applied to a few UCs as Econ major. Calc 2 is their pre-req.

Without Calc 2, i dont have enough units to transfer.

Any thoughts? Shed your light please T_T

Why are you doing so badly in calc 2? Unless you want to stay another year… I suggest you tough it out. And plus, late classes are hard to find… but if you find one then I suggest you take that route.

Noo, i really dont want to stay another year.
I believe my school does offer a lot of these late classes, but who do i report these changes to?

It doesn’t really matter. If it’s the same calc class, on the same term, it’ll be redundant to report the changes.

oh i meant taking a completed different class.

a uc transferable class. but not calc 2

Calc 2 is tough. I’m having the same prob and I’m an econ major too. Every freakin day I am questioning taking regular calc 2 instead of doing the business calculus route. What I would do for an UCLA acceptance! Sheesh

yeah its so much harder then Calc I

Orangess: I would not drop it esp. since it’s one of your prerequisites.

but what if i get a F ?

Give us a grade breakdown…

Where did you apply?

Truth is you could try and apply next winter.

Dropping Calc2 for a econ major is a killer for UCI/UCLA/CAL.

If you don’t drop and get a F they’ll rescind you it’s hard to say what you can do.

Your best option would be to tough it out and try and get a C.

Talk to your teacher maybe explain your situation or work harder the last 1/2 of the semester i’m pretty sure if you do alot better you’re teacher will work with you on your grade

i was in a similar situation with math, albeit it wasn’t calculus 2 it was really hard for me.

i failed my math course and they rescinded my application, it wasn’t a pre-req for my major but an IGETC requirement.

i took a different math, Statistics, and i passed with an A. although the ease of it is subjective.

i recommend anchoring down and getting a tutor, if i only spent the money in my original math class Spring 2009, I would already be attending UCLA. i only needed a C but alas i was broke and the free tutors at the tutoring lab at my community college weren’t enough.

even if its $100 bucks a week until the semester ends, do it.
you can find tutors for as cheap as $25 an hour…actually that’s not cheap but its hard to find one cheaper in higher math levels.

Basically, what is your grade % right now and do you REALISTICALLY think you can bring it up? I’ve seen people who were accepted and their letter stated they must get a B or higher in their remaining pre-req courses. It would pretty much be a slap in the face if you tried really hard and ended up getting rescinded because you were only able to bring it up to a C. Maybe talk directly to a counselor at a UC to see what their take on it is.

I’m in a very similar situation too. Basically since it’s my last semester at CC, I tried my best to cram as many classes in as possible and that turned out to be a mistake as I really need to devote a lot more time to Calculus 2 than I have. I applied to UCSD with TAG as a Psychology (B.S.) major and just received my acceptance letter. The major prereqs for psychology include up to calculus 3 (who knows why?). Dropping calc 2 has put me short of 4 prerequisite classes. (I am going to double major, so I had to split my time at CC between the two majors)

So, I will have 76 units by the end of the semester and will have IGETC done as well. I currently have a 3.5 GPA. Because I’m TAG certified, UCSD can’t rescind me right? I already dropped the calc class but I can’t stop worrying. I definitely plan on retaking it in the summer when it is the only class I will be taking and will have more time to get a better grade. Will I need to contact UCSD to tell them about my schedule change? Thanks.

If I were you, I would not drop the class, especially because it is a prerequisite. Talk to your professor, let them know your situation and that you truly need to pass. Do EVERYTHING that you can, even if it means spending all your time at office hours.

If you drop the class with a W, you will not have fulfilled that prerequisite, they’re gonna rescind your admission and you’re gonna have to retake it and reapply again.
If you fail the class, you will not have fulfilled that prerequisite, they’re gonna rescind your admission and you’re gonna have to retake it and reapply again, but at least you’re giving yourself the chance to pass.

Am in the same situation with Calc. I barely passed the first Calc and I am having a hard time it now. But I need it to go to my school

damn… now i feel like im gonna fail calc and i’ve avoided it in high school.

in on the calc2 issues lol. i hate memorizing derivatives/anti-derivatives and all the other formulas…

brb putting them all in my ti-83
