I am planning on dropping AP Chemistry after the first semester because I cannot handle the work involved with it and all the rest of my classes and keep my job with enough hours to save money for college. I will still have AP English, AP calculus, concurrent government, concurrent eco, I will also have debate, sociology and health. I have taken 4 ap classes last year as well.
How do I explain the drop to colleges without looking like a complete slacker?? If you could help I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

What are your grades in the classes? (particularly chem) its never good to drop, but your classes seem challenging enough to make it OK. What would you take in place of chem?

Why can't you just tell them what you told us? It sounds reasonable to me.

my grade right now is an 85. if I didn't have to work I could stay in the class but I'm working 30 hours a week and it is killing me. i would probably go to a specialty history class- i don't know what it is next semester- or sociology

stay in it. a drop looks bad. it sucks but... you'll be okay : )

If you decide to drop, do you even have to take another class? Can you take a study hall?

If you do drop (and I like ADad's thought re study hall possibility given your schedule), how will that leave you in terms of recommended # of science courses at your target schools? I looked at your list on another thread, but don't know if it's your current list and which schools you are most interested in.

We're coming up to winter break, when you'll be able to sleep and relax a bit. Stay in chemistry and consider cutting your work hours. 30 hours/week is a LOT to work. You might be better off--and more likely to get scholarships--working more hours during your vacations and the summer.

I know you feel you have to work to save money for college, but 30 hours a week is a lot. Is there any way you can cut back on the work. I think that AP Chem is doable esp seeing that you have an 85.

School is a job also, spending 30 hours working another job is crazy. IMHO

I have to take another class our school doesn't allow study hall. If i drop the course I will have taken Pre-Ap and Ap Biology, PE-Ap Chemistry, and COncurrent Physics. I would love to cut down on thehours I work, but right now I really need the money. I am thinking about only working 25 hours a week next semester. Someone suggested working more during breaks but I really can't. My schedule becomes 40 hours a week during breaks and that is all they will let me work.

Come on, guys. She has to work and has plenty of APs and plenty of science courses. Your counselor can explain why you dropped the course. Life can not revolve completely around what "looks good" on your college applications. You are balancing a lot of things. If you really feel that the chem course is too much for you, then talk to your counselor about dropping it. Life will go on.

I sort of agree with MomofWildChild, except that I question the need to work so many hours. You don't tell us why you need to work so much. If it's money for college, then it doesn't really make sense. You don't know what your financial package is yet, and the money you're making now might not help that much. If you're supporting a family, then I can see it.
Taking AP Chem now may save you money in college by allowing you to place in a higher class, thereby saving time (and money.)
What is your work? Are you self-supporting?
