Dropping Seminar

Is it possible to drop or postpone the freshman seminar and/or freshman learning center? This class is a waste of my time and consumes too many credits. I would rather take BIO 202 w/ lab. Is it possible for me to do this?

NO.

[believe me... i wanted to drop it too...]

No, it's not possible... and the seminar's only one credit! You'll get more out of it than you think.

-Chris

How many times a week is the reg. seminar? Does it have a seminar? How long is each session?

One hour a week for the SBU 101.

-Chris

Dude, I hear 202 is full up anyway... you wouldn't be able to take it even if you could drop the seminar.

As it happens, I did drop SBU 101... SOLAR shouldn't have let me, but it did, so I took advantage because I was commuting and the timing of the section I was in would have made my life absolutely miserable. They've probably closed all those loopholes now (I've never heard of anyone else doing it). I know people who enjoyed it, and I know people who thought it was a waste of time. If nothing else, I hear it's a good way to meet other freshmen.

I know what you mean. I want to drop it also for a few reasons. One it will cut into my review time and two, I have a lab position at the hospital already. I am sadly enrolled in Freshman Learning Seminar. That class is so time-consuming. See if I drop that, then I'll be placed in SBU 101. That is a waste of time in itself. I could be doing other stuff as it is.

Speaking of BIO 202, I am on waiting list w/ 70 other ppl. Though I prob won't get it, at least I'll never regret trying-- know what I mean.

Also can I speak w/ anyone to drop it. Or do i drop it myself?

You're not listening. It's only one hour a week. Seriously. If that's going to kill you, you have bigger things to worry about.

The only reason it was a problem for me was that I was commuting a long distance, and the section I got put in (the only one available, since my orientation was only a few days before the semester started) would have forced me to leave the house insanely early and then wait around for almost 7 hours until my next class! You really, really don't have any excuse. Suck it up.

And it's one hour a week that involves you getting advised and registered for the spring, as well as fulfilling a graduation requirement. I'd say you might as well have fun with it. If you're coming into college with the attitude that everything's a waste of your precious time, you're going to have a rough go of it. Go to class, make friends, and enjoy yourself. No reason to start alienating faculty and staff members by thinking you're above the law.

-Chris

I actually already dropped it through my solar system. I cannot fit it into my schedule b/c it will take away time from precious review time. I am taking BIO 202. I need time to study. Will anyone pressure me into taking it?

you will probably have to take it during the second semester, it is MANDATORY for most schools unfortunately.

But I will have the same arduous schedule second semester. Who can I speak to about it? Can you please give me someone's email or name?

You should call the registrar's office. I know for some state schools, they will make you take some thechnical course to make up for failing to take seminar within your first year. Usually, your college will pick the substitute course, I think it tends to be interactive classes they might consider a good replacement. I don't know how it works at SB, though.

If you CAN fit it into your schedule, suck it up and take the class like the other students. It is only one hour a week and you have no excuse to be exempt from it. If you aren't prepared to handle college level courseload, you should drop one of your other classes, not a 1 hour/week seminar where everyone gets an A.

I know what you mean, but besides class I also have a research position so I would rather be doing that and hopefully get a publication than taking that class.

And so would everyone at the school, but you can't bend a requirement. If you can't take it second semester, find a way to fit it into your schedule. Further, you don't even know if you will enter bio 202 yet and there are several sections of seminar to choose from. Again, there is no practical way of avoiding seminar, so find a way to make it work--no one gets the perfect schedule everytime, you have to make sacrifices and sometimes postpone taking a class to cover the requirements.

No I got the class. i got BIO 202 it is in my schedule.

Curious, how did you get the lab position at the Stony Brook Hospital? What area is the research in? Was it some kind of program you had to be accepted in or did you just call them?

I called them. It is in cancer. They also accepted me because I had 1.5 yrs of previous experience.

Would you mind being a little more specific? Is it the Medical School or the Hospital? What branch of cancer? Perhaps a telephone number? I would really appreciate it.
