Dual Degree

Hey all,

I was admitted to UF this last Feb. and I want to have a dual degree at UF, one in the college of Business and the other in the College of Engineering. Would anyone know who I should contact to get more info on how to do this?

Welcome to the Gator Nation!

You will get to work with your first academic advisor during preview. A student advisor and a regular advisor. However, don’t expect a lot of hand holding…

I can guess what the advisor will say, that it’s too early to decide on a dual major. Take a year’s worth of classes and then you’ll be better able to tell if a dual degree plan works.

My advise? Don’t do it. Both degree’s require a large amount of time and effort, both in and out of the class room. Having both degree’s will not help you in your job search, and for engineering, it could hurt you (as the first question asked in every engineering interview will be “Are you sure you want to be an engineer?”).

Instead, look for synergies between the two majors. Business is a very common minor for engineering students, while Industrial Engineers take many of the same classes (Financial Accounting, Economics, etc). In fact, it’s not uncommon for IE’s to go on and get their MBA instead of a master’s in IE.

All of this you’ll be able to work out your first year in college. You’ll be able to get feedback from other students, professors, advisors, and folks in the industry. Don’t expect much clarity from Preview, other than your first semester courses!

Good Luck!

@Gator88NE‌ thanks for the info!

While I have you, I also have a question about UF Honors. Other than Hume hall, what other benefits come with being part of the honors program? Are there any extra responsibilities that come with it?

Again, thanks!

You really don’t have any responsibilities. You do have requirements if you want to complete the program:

Note that graduating with honors is different from competing the “Honors” program. If you want to complete the program, you will want to take a few honor classes (for the points) and engage in enrichment activities (see the above link).
