Duke Class of 2017 RD Discussion

How does duke compare to schools like Stanford or Wharton or oxford in fields such as consulting or other areas of finance? If I went to duke I would come as a robertson scholar. But, even tho it will be 240000 more expensive for stanford/wharton, or 150,000 at oxford, my parents are inclined toward Stanford (scea offer) or oxford (satisfied conditional offer) or Wharton (if I get in when RD results come out) because they think that these schools would be stronger for getting finance positions and have stronger international prestige for finance?

Would a duke economics major with robertson scholarship carry enough weight to compete with those top-prestige schools in finance?

based on what you just said, I’m going to to take a shot in the dark and say that you’ll be fine wherever you go

Eh, from what I’ve researched, getting into a top-ranked school is really important if you want to get into a top firm.

if you happen to get into Wharton, that would be the way to go in your case, finances allowing. UPENN Wharton is a global brand and a finance/consulting powerhouse. Esp. if considering working out of the states, Wharton would trump duke/stanford for employment opportunities in finance. Not too familiar with Oxford.

-deferred Wharton Early Decision applicant and Duke RD applicant

lol wharton hands-down dude

Duke is a top school. If you get a good GPA and interview well, you can get a job anywhere. My sister graduated from Johns Hopkins last spring, which is not as prestigious as Duke, and she, her boyfriend, and her best friend all secured jobs at top consulting firms (McKinsey and Deloitte).
Basically, any of those schools can get you great jobs, though Wharton probably has the best connections in the East and Stanford in the West. But Robertson Scholar? Come on, how can you turn that down?

So I am a direct admit to Kelley at Indiana and was wondering if Duke’s economics program would be better than Kelley for investment banking and entrepreneurship? Duke is still my top choice but I’m trying to figure out if it is truly worth the prestige.

Duke>Kelley. Hands down.

To the Roberston Scholar, Duke is a great school. Wharton is probably considered the most prestigious undergrad business school, as they should be, but being a Robertson scholar at Duke is quite the honor. And the fact that’s its about 1/4 of a million dollars cheaper, personally, I’d be hard pressed to turn down Duke.

Kelly is no where close to Duke. 8 from the bottom 25 of my high school went to Kelly.

Hey UpTheSaints, if you were choosing between Wharton and a full ride at a school like Brown (which is a great school but not heavily recruited by consulting firms) I would go with Wharton provided that I could afford it.
However, the difference between Duke and Wharton (in terms of recruiting), while present, is quite minuscule. This is because Duke is a huge feeder to consulting firms and investment banks in its own right.
If you go to Duke, get good grades and put yourself out there, you are virtually guaranteed to get into any firm you want. So why not have a lot of fun and save a quarter of a million dollars while you’re at it?

As far as Kelley is concerned, I would choose Duke over a full ride from Kelley without any hesitation. They are not in the same league.

Duke’s gay scene seems pretty lacking…bad, even. :S

^That stinks  it’s probably better than anywhere in Louisiana though : D

Is anyone else getting super nervous? It didn’t really hit me until today that next week I start hearing from important schools like ucla and ucsb. And then duke in 2 weeks. Ugh I can’t even describe how badly I want to go

I cannot put into words how nervous I am. Instead I’m all up in avoidant behavior.

And then the last round of research seems completely positive. Duke seems to have a really well-organized LGBT organization that provides a lot of support for students, even while a significant minority of the student body might be somewhat hostile. >.>

Lehigh I know!!! My gosh it went by so fast

It honestly did! I cant wait. Im so so so excited for college

@Philo: that’s a shame. I thought the LGBT scene would at least be somewhat active. Oh well. And I thought you already got accepted via scholarship

@MuffinMan: Really? My gay friend goes to Tulane and he seems to have no trouble finding an active gay scene around the city. Then again, it’s New Orleans and idk about the rest of Louisiana.

It did go by very quickly. I’m gonna miss the days when my mind was at ease, thinking that decisions were but a vision far away.

I don’t have the scholarship yet. I have to go to one of those interviews — except it’s one that actually matters…

Guys, just curious, but does Duke have any merit based scholarships apart from the need based aid.

Yeah…but Duke’s strategy is to have a few really selective full scholarships as opposed to many smaller less selective scholarships. There are some exceptions, like Duke’s Carolinian LGBT scholarship, but…
