I know it was my SAT scores being only a 1030/ 1600 but when literally everyone else in my school who applied got in or got in to the honors college its really upsetting. Most of them are very smart and do deserve it, but there are also kids who I have better stats than and they got in!! I just wanted to go to Maryland SOOOO BADLY!!!! I wanted the sports, the spirit, the campus, TESTUDO. I have just been so upset since I got rejected and I cant help but think that I don't deserve or am not smart enough to go there. Congrats to all who got accepted though!

Did you try appealing?

Sent from my SGH-T959V using CC

that never works unless they missed your SAT scores or something. But even if they did mine would be on the low side. With all the graphs and stuff my school offers with Naviance I actually thought I had a chance…

It’s not all about the SAT score though. Even though UMD seems like it’s all about the numbers, it’s not. It’s mainly about what something new this student would be bringing to the university. They look at the whole picture, your diversity, and leadership is important as well. At least, that’s what my cousin’s friend who works in admissions at UMD told me.

^namesss…you are not dumb because of a decision made by an institution. I feel very sad for you and hope that you will find another great school that is just the right fit for you.

My D was accepted into UMD for Spring 2014 and will most likely not attend since we are oos. You may want to appeal for starting in the Spring semester as an option. I think that a % of kids accepted for Spring will choose not to attend and there may be more flexibility in those spots that may open up. I wish you the best of luck!

You are not dumb! It was a very competitive applicant pool this year with only 41% of students admitted. If you love Maryland why not take a gap year and do something interesting or even take classes at MC or Howard Community or another community college if you are farther way. Then you can prove to UM next year that you can do college level work. Standardized tests are not measures of intelligence; they show how well a student can take that standardized tests! So keep your chin up; every student will be disappointed in the college process unless they did not reach high enough.

And if you go to a community college and get good grades, they don’t seem to consider SAT scores from high school in transfer decisions (and they are very open to MD transfers). It always works out. Best wishes to you.

Nameness,

I am very sorry to hear that you did not get accepted. Please do not feel that you are dumb in any means. First of all, SAT scores are not an accurate predictor of one’s intelligence. Second of all, college admissions are VERY subjective and based off of the one person that reads your application. Just because one person thinks that your not good enough does that mean that you are not good enough? I remember when I didn’t get into Hopkins, which I wanted to go to more than anything in the world, I though my whole world came to an end. Just know that somewhere out there remains a better school for you and that everything happens for a reason. If you still really want to attend UMD, consider attending a community college or another school and then transferring. As for appealing, it’s worth a shot. I would call them up ASAP and find out the process to appeal.

As a graduate of UMCP, I can tell you not to sweat it. Either go to CC or another four year institution and get good grades. You can transfer later. I don’t know what county you live in but there are several very good CCs in Maryland. Most of my family and friends went to CC and then onto a four year institution. We all believe we got a better education at the CC. You will find fun and brigth students no matter where you attend.
