I will be an incoming Freshman (Fall 2016) studying as a pre-med student majoring in Biochemistry and Cell Biology (maybe) and during the summer I plan to dye my hair pink. Light, cotton candy pink. Unnatural hair colors are typically associated with being unprofessional and “wild” or whatever, but I feel like thats such an incredibly rude and terrible assumption. I’m a hardworking person, I’m professional when I need to be, etc etc. But I just want pink hair because i’ve never dyed my hair before and I think it’d be really fun. Also because my favorite color is pink too. Would this give the wrong impression to some professors/students/faculty/anyone else about who I am? I would figure it’d be a good environment to do things like that because Rice is about intellect, diversity, and individuality. But i’m not too sure and I wouldn’t want to start the year with my professors giving me sour looks. Also I’m a guy, and I hope that doesn’t change anyones answers, but sometimes it factors in because our society is quite sexist (meaning unnatural hair color is typically a “feminine” thing to do, especially with the color pink but colors know no gender!)
Hey man I’m an incoming freshman and I plan on dyeing my hair too. The way I see it, if people judge you, it’ll just be easier to separate the nice people from the mean people. And it’s okay if professors judge you because it’s not like you’ll be applying for internships in the first year. Just do what you want to do dude, don’t worry about it. Trust me, there will be a lot of people (including me) who won’t care what you look like
Freshman year seems like a prime time to take a risk with your look – lots of time to change it up if you don’t like it, lots of people to test it out on. Go for it
Plenty of people here (men and women) have dyed hair. Their professors don’t treat them any differently. Rice is pretty open to different forms of expression; professors even seem to appreciate this
Besides the fact that it’s acceptable year round, it’s also the case that tons of people get wacky haircuts or dyes for beer bike, so there’s definitely no stigma against it
