jai6638: I called NEU. I know, yikes. Talk about dealing with the hard facts of life.

I called their main office and asked who I should talk to about admission and financial aid (merit award). The lady asked me what city and state I lived in and gave me the number for the counselor who was in charge of my case.

I call the counselor (SD) and had to leave a message. She returned my call a couple of hours later and was very helpful. I hadn't been able to open my decision letter yet so that was another one of my problems.

Anyway, I asked her if they were still mailing me a hard copy of the decision letter since I wasn't able to open it. Yes, they were mailing the letters by Friday.

me: Would any information about merit awards and financial aid accompany the letter?

SD: (looks for any other letter in my file) I don't see any other letter here right now... you are a very strong candidate... honors program and all... (stops looking) I'll call Boston tomorrow and I'll get back to you.

It sounded promising at first but I dunno. I guess I'll know by tomorrow what's going on. I doubt it was mistake.

Seriously, if you're gonna ask, just ask. If worse comes to worse, you're probably not gonna end up attending the school and then it wouldn't really matter much. At best, you'll get your questions answered. You could word it nicely, "What kind of standards do use to decide on merit aid awards and the honors program?"

Okay I have posted before and I am going to try one more time. Please read this carefully. DS is a freshman at NEU with merit aid and in honors program. Merit aid is not tied to honors program. There are plenty of kids in honors program without merit aid and kids with merit not in honors. Basically merit aid has to do with how much they want you, where else you are applying, where geographically you are from, what your major is, etc. etc. In other words, there is no standard formula for figuring it out. Additionally it seems to me from antedoctal evidence and talking to lots of other parents at summer orientation, etc. that they look at where else you applied, etc. Plus this year they had more EA than last year and the standards keep increasing.

So if you did not get enough merit aid to attend and really want to attend, then by all means plead your case. But you will not be able to compare against another candidate and figure out why who got what...

Boston University IS a better school academically, however Northeastern's co-op program gives BU's business program a run for their money. That's a tough one

That's funny because I was wondering the same thing. I got into Northeastern, but deferred from BU's CGS. However my major is prelaw, and Northeastern does have a whole school devoted to law while BU doesn't have the major and I have to go through CGS. Part of me still wants to hear from BU while a bit of me has my heart set on Northeastern.

haha Verbalizing, your story is identical to mine. Being deferred is definitely a haunting experience and it's extremely hard to not base my decisions on it, but if I didn't get into BU I would be completely happy to go to NEU. Northeastern is making such huge strides towards improving every aspect of their school, that in a couple of years Northeastern will be way more of a respected and prestigious school than it is now. Right around the time that both of us would be applying to law school.

I checked my account at NEU again and now there is a Scholarship Award link at the very bottom. I still am not able to view it but I am extremely happy that there is SOMETHING going on.

That's funny luckedout, which school of BU did you apply to? Northeastern is definitely winning me over right about now. I plan on going to Early Action Day and then using the free time to go and visit BU as well.

are there any current NEU students who received a less-than-spectacular merit scholarship in the early decision who received more when the regular decisions were released?

senior o7, they won't increase your merit scholarship on their own when RD are released. If you need more merit $ to be able to attend, you probably need to call financial aid and discuss your situation with them.

ok but a friend of mine received a so-so package EA and then a much better one RD and im pretty sure she didnt show any financial need at all...

I was finally able to open their letters and I saw that I received 10k/yr for a total of $40,000. However, they also said that since I am part of the PharmD program, I will be able to receive 5k per semester until I finish my program. That part was a little confusing.

senior o7: In my award letter, NEU said that they might consider me for some of their other merit scholarships which "might be few in number" but are blah blah blah. Don't remember the exact words. Anyway, if they said that, then it is possible that students are able to get more money. And, I'm not sure, but since they award their merit scholarships to the top 1% of their applicant pool, wouldn't they have to wait until at least their RD to decide on who gets how much money (since they can't really tell who the top 1% of their applicant pool is?

I believe it means that you will receive $5000/semester or $10,000/year for the duration of the program. My son is in the PT program which is six years and twelve academic semesters. It is my understanding that the above scholarship would be for a total of $60,000 rather than $40,000 for a bachelor's degree if the PharmD is also a six year program.

My son received same award as mediocreme, letter is unclear. We called admissions the total value is $50,000. 5k per semester you attend classes. The sixth year in pharmacy there is no award- advanced practice experience.
We found this to be the case at all the pharmacy schools he applied to.

Oi I had a dream last night that I got another letter saying they changed their mind about the honors program because they mixed up my application with someone else. That wasn't fun.

Was everyone's decision letter online the same as the one they got in the mail? Mine was completely different with different dates. The online one says I got into the Honors Program. I just received my letter today and there is no mention of that or the scholarship I saw online.....

That is very confusing, DoubleChocolate. I did not receive either of the online letters by mail from NEU. What I got was a third letter welcoming me to NEU and announcing the early applicant get-together on Feb 24th.
