EA decisions mailed 12/19

I did not apply to USC for admission, but three of my friends did (Early Action), and 2/3 got acceptance packets/letters TODAY (In State)! Just so you all know! (:

Thanks for the info, Angel, no mail from South Carolina in NY today!

Happy for our D, she got her acceptance letter today. Now it’s the wait for the Honors app status and scholarships/financial aid. Already has Lieber but really hoping she’ll be considered for McNair. I’m not too optimistic though as I’ve heard competition is extremely stiff.

I just got my acceptance letter. I applied under the top scholars deadline. That;s early ACTION right? not early decision?

still waiting on honor’s app and scholarships… crossing fingers for mcnairs!

hope2help: just out of curiosity what is your D’s stats? agreed about hearing of the competition. But based on what I read on the internet, I think its more holistic than stat-based.

for me: 2200 SAT, loads of curricular activites with depth, rank 1 with 3.96 UW and 5.125 W( our county does it where AP classes is 6.0, honors 5.0 and reg. 4.0), my essays… hmm they weren’t the best that I’ve come up with. =(

Neorobie and Hope2Help

What states are you in??? Waiting for letter in CT. Thanks.

Sunny Florida!

Acceptance in pennsylvania! 4.05 weighted GPA and 1230 cr/m hoping for some type of merit scholarship to bring down out of state costs!

Hi HopeToHelp,

Congratulations! The following is information on the McNair Scholarship:

First, here are the statistics for the 41 students who were named McNair Scholar Candidates for this year’s freshman class, in a letter that was dated January 26 and was sent by FedEx – Priority Overnight on January 27:

1) Average R+M SAT score of 1495 (or ACT composite score of 33).
2) Average weighted high school GPA of 4.63.

McNair Scholar Candidates are invited to participate in the McNair Scholars Candidate Weekend. The goal is to select the 20 McNair Scholars. More then 20 students are offered McNair Scholarships because USC knows that some will choose other schools (e.g., the Ivies). On or around 27 students were offered McNair Scholarships for this year’s freshman class.

McNair Scholar Candidates who attend the McNair Scholars Candidate Weekend, but who are not named McNair Scholars, automatically become McNair Finalists. Each receives a McNair Finalist Scholarship worth $11,000 a year, plus a laptop, etc., etc. A McNair Scholar Candidate must participate in the McNair Scholars Candidate Weekend to be eligible for the McNair Finalist Scholarship.

Because your daughter is already a Lieber, and because the Lieber is a “stackable” scholarship, she will be guaranteed $17,000 a year if she is named a McNair Finalist, which is within a couple of thousand dollars a year of a “full-boat” scholarship because Honors College students receive in-state tuition.

Congrats to all accepted! I hope you’ll heavily consider USC. It’s definitely a great school with a lot of opportunities. :)

Thank you very much for all of this information. Our D is meets the averages stats from last year but I am still afraid to get our hopes up too high. Certainly sounds like a fantastic scholarship though. Is your son a McNair Scholar? When was the McNair Scholars weekend last year? We are in Ohio. Where it is snowing and the furnace just went out. Sunny SC is sound REALLY good right about now!

Acceptance letter came today, Northeastern Ohio. Well, my son isn’t home now to open the envelope, but the big Gamecock saying “Y E S” on the back of the envelope looks like a good sign. :D

Hi HopeToHelp,

Yes, he is a McNair Scholar and LOVING the Honors College. On 12/13, I posted a response to your question, “Is your son happy at USC?” It has some details on his experience in the Honors College, but I’m not sure you saw the post because someone else had entered a post between yours and mine. Anyway, the following answers your questions about the timing of the McNair Scholars Weekend last year, along with some other information:

McNair Scholars Candidate Weekend took place from 6:00 PM Saturday, February 26, 2011 through about 1:30 PM on Monday, February 28. This can be a problem because that is a VERY popular timeframe for colleges and universities to have their merit scholarship competitions. For example, our son had three overlapping scholarship competitions, and it was only physically possible to participate in two of them. The other one that he did attend ended about five hours before the beginning of McNair Scholars Candidate Weekend, so he slept in the backseat of the family car during the 3 ½ hour drive to USC. It was a hectic four days!

McNair Scholars were notified by phone calls from Harris Pastides, President of USC, the following Saturday and Sunday (March 5-6). A follow-up FedEx was sent out the following Monday, with the for three-day delivery option, which we received that Thursday, March 9.

You are correct about the climate at USC. I just checked weather.com. The forecast for the next ten days is highs in the 60’s to low 70’s. Also, if your daughter is named a McNair Scholar Candidate, I will be happy to answer any questions you have. Just PM me. The same holds for when she has to decide whether to attend the Honors College, which clearly her stats will be among her options.

Hope2Help
when S was a candidate for the McNair, he was also a Lieber (graduated from the Honors College last year). He ultimately was named a Finalist, not a Scholar, but because the scholarships were stackable, he wound up with more $$ than some of the scholars. He also received a scholarship from the college his major was housed in and was offered a one time extra scholarship that he had to turn down b/c it would have put him over the limit (your scholarship $$ cant be over the stated cost of education, which includes tuition, room and board, books and fees, travel allowance…cost of education will differ from university to university).Choosing USC was a no brainer and S enjoyed his 4 years there. He is from NY (suburban NYC) and had no problems fitting in and making friends.
The weather on the McNair weekend was wonderful, we walked around w/o jackets and had lunch outdoors!

D received hers today as well - Raleigh, NC. Now waiting to hear from Honors College.
Congrats to all!

In NJ and still waiting to hear back. I called admissions on Friday and they said they had started mailing letters out on Thursday. I really hope they aren’t sending acceptances first and rejections after that!

I got my acceptance letter today!!! Now just waiting to hear from the honors college!

Is the only way to find out the admissions decision from receiving the letter, or can you find out online anywhere? Like on the application portal or checklist?

Well, no official acceptance here in NY, but if I sign my son into the VIP on the South Carolina site…there is a spot to pay admssion deposit, so I am assuming, but you never know!

ddotjon…that does sound like good news!! How can you log into VIP? How did you get a VIP ID and password to even check?

I was deferred! Quite shocked, actually… It was my safety that I recently decided I really really love! I hope I hear good news in march.
