Speaking of research papers, wanna hear the most evil thing in the world? For my AP Lit class, our teacher has made this incredibly vague, broad research paper (example: my topic is ‘family’ and that’s it) due on Sunday at midnight. Meaning that even though Friday is our last day before break, we are basically slaves to this research paper for the first two days of Christmas break. Happy Holidays from AP Lit!

@Glenny:
Here’s the Web site: [Fast facts, Freshman, Office of Undergraduate Admission - Northwestern University](http://www.ugadm.northwestern.edu/freshman/facts/)

@BLJ422, I asked a few Medill students and they said plenty of people get in who don’t have something to suggest they are super passionate about journalism. Plus, the people who apply who hold a position on a publication probably don’t stand out because there are so many editors applying.
I’m an editor in chief, but two of my fellow editors also applied early to Medill, so being editor won’t stand out for me :-

This has become the largest thread in the northwestern forum and we haven’t even gotten decisions yet.

@Teeannwhy
I just started an account today too. It is absolutely addicting and unhealthy.

I know it’s not coming today, but I still can’t help refreshing my e-mail and this site every 20 seconds. I am not getting anything done!!

I don’t do very well on standardized tests which is probably not a good thing.

And in case people are wondering, the 2012 enrollment are:
WCAS - 1,154
School of Comm - 244
School of Ed. and Social Policy - 39
McCormick - 358
Medill - 179
Bienen - 104

@crystalcastles is there any tension on your staff because more than one of the editors are applying? I’m applying and so is our managing editor and i swear if one of us get rejected blood will be shed.

McCormick.

Another factor that is insane in this process is teacher recommendations. They are under no obligation to do them and many times have no desire to. It’s extra work for which they don’t feel they get paid.

I have also found that weighting grades in HS is pretty useless for college admissions purposes. They look at the raw grades and make their own judgments.

“We’re all in this together. =)”

…You wanna talk about deterioration of anything? HSMS… enough said

I know that wasn’t intended for it… but it was first to come to mind

ross those stats just convinced me that i will be rejected. I didn’t know the number for medill would be that low!

To citylove - isn’t it amazing how some teachers, knowing full well what everyone is going through with college admissions stuff, seem to go out of their way to try to make students lives miserable?

My best friend also applied ED. That makes this whole thing so much worse… because unless we both get in or both get rejected, one of us is going to have to try to be happy for the other while being super crushed about our own decision.

@madridiana, so far there hasn’t been tension, it’s kind of like a “we’re all in this together” atmosphere. But I think we’re all really worried about any tension that could start after we all find out.

Objective - YES. And my Lit teacher seems to be the master of this! She does it with everything though… I’ve even heard her yell at kids who have 6 hour after-school theatre rehearsals and could only read and annotate HALF of some giant packet she assigned the night before. Haha.

I believe that Medill is one of the most unique undergrad schools in terms of admissions. There’s an obvious emphasis on journalistic experience and passion; if you lack those qualities, they will admit you, but you better have above-average-for-NU credentials. I’m basing this off of my talks with tour guides and current students, plus the ambiguous whisperings of College Confidential. So maybe we’re all wrong.

Does anyone know how many people applied to each school? And the admit rate for the specific school??

@madriana
Those are just enrollment rates. There must be people who turned Northwestern down. I think a lot of us are doubting ourselves right now–you’re not alone.

No one in my school has heard of Northwestern, so rejected or accepted, I don’t think it will make much of a difference. I go to a rural public high school where more than 50% are farmers and will continue running their farms after high school.

Oh and @crytalcastles

Your staff has three editor-in-chiefs? How many student journos are you working with? And we should swap PDFs while waiting in agony for these decisions.

Favorite TV shows: Friends, 30 Rock, Law and Order: SVU

and my guilty pleasure: Say Yes to the Dress

yes, I do watch a TLC show entirely about the wedding dress selection process…

@citylove: I have the same problem. My best friend applied ED to Yale, and unless we both get the same decision, one of us is going to be in a very difficult position.

I really tried to get into my school’s Newspaper class, but because certain classes are only offered in certain hours, had I taken Newspaper I wouldn’t have been able to get the PE credits I need to actually graduate high school.

And about TV, how did I forget to mention Law and Order? I can’t get enough SVU.

Hm. I know this is a really stupid question, but is Yearbook considered journalism? I’m the editor-in-chief, and I put that down…will that make a difference in my application? I applied WCAS, not Medill.

I love Law and Order SVU, but it coincides with Modern Family…

I just found out the actress that plays Alex Cabot graduated from Northwestern. Haha, awesome.

how do your yearbooks / newspapers rank nationally? like best of show, etc.

I wish all of you the best of luck on the 15th and hopefully I’ll be able to see you guys in NW next year.
