@AAA124555 You are very welcome. S19 is still deciding. His top choices are VT, Penn State, UMD, U Del, and Loyola MD. I would put UMD in last place because of money and some other reasons.
I saw someone else asked the question (but not answered)ā¦Does anyone know when the letters are mailed? I would have assumed they were mailed at the latest, Monday in which we should have already received. Also, any thoughts on an engineering major, also interested in theater, music etc to live at studio 72? Prichard hall looks awful thoughā¦doesnāt even have AC and hall bathrooms?..seriously?
@markmil1 Most of the residence halls at VT do not have A/C, and many of them are hall bathrooms - traditional residence hall setup. A/C is usually only an issue for a couple weeks and everyone has multiple fans in their rooms. My sonās and most of his friendās experience has been that traditional style has been fine, and that there is more socialization and a friendlier community atmosphere vs. suite style.
Does anyone know how many students VT enrolls in their first year Engineering program?
@eager2019 1,891 enrolled in 2018. https://irweb.ir.vt.edu/webtest/admission_data.aspx
@eager2019 In 2018, 1,962 freshman were enrolled in General Engineering. This site has much more dataā¦
Edit to add: The site @ShenVal18 posted is much more accurate.
Does anyone know if the admission to Virginia Tech is āconditionalā? I mean, say, Berkeley writes in its admission letters āAdmission is conditional on you presenting your high school diploma and getting no more than one āCā in your senior year.ā Is something like that written on VT admission letters?
@markmil1 I have friends whose students were accepted into the honors program and they have received their letters already. The rest of us still have cobwebs in our mailbox. Everyone will eventually receive a letter of acceptance, I just canāt say when. Maybe today?
@VAMom2019 Honors college acceptances arenāt being announced for EA or RD until March 15th. Are the students that have received letters ED? Maybe they arenāt going by the website stated date? Curious because my daughters still has the lingo about if you are āInvitedā
Admission is conditional as you have to submit your final high school transcript in the summer. I havenāt seen anything showing what would get you kicked out. I imagine they have to have something
@cakeisgreat I think Honors College and the Orion LLC would be very complementary for a biochemistry major. Iām not certain, but there may be honors level courses in physics, organic chemistry, biology, etc that your son might benefit from (smaller classes and priority registration).
Most of my points above about Honors are specific to engineering students, who already need 128 credits (vs 120 credits for Biochemistry) to graduate and Iām pretty sure thereās no honors level version of the Mechanics of Deformable Bodies class.
So, Computer Science.
Virginia Tech (honor college - status unknown)
vs
William and Mary (Monroe Scholars).
Which one is better? (SAT 1580, may be there will be honor college after allā¦)
@ElenaParent Computer Science at Virginia Tech falls under the College of Engineering, so as Iāve noted earlier, I wouldnāt recommend Honors. Rather, I would recommend Galileo LLC with other CS and engineering majors.
William and Mary is an amazing school and Iām not here to promote Virginia Tech, but for Computer Science I would probably recommend VT over W&M. The Monroe Scholars program at W&M looks excellent and would make his already small classes even smaller. But the tech-related resources at Virginia Tech are much better.
Also, Virginia Tech has a much more comprehensive course list for the CS major than W&Mā¦

Thanks, @STEM2017 . S, I am not sure whether my son applied to Galileo LLCā¦ How is it done? When? Today seems to be the deadline for some merit applications at Va Techā¦
@ElenaParent Your son can apply for Galileo AFTER he accepts a spot at Virginia Tech and pays the fee. Only then will he be allowed to access the housing portal and apply to Galileo.
Today is the deadline for my older son at VT with his Engineering Scholarship application. He usually gets some money but the big dollars are reserved for the high GPA kids - heās not one of them.
@STEM2017 I wonder if my kid id everything he could as far as getting ābig dollarsā. He says he filled out the application (https://eng.vt.edu/academics/undergraduate-students/merit-scholarships.html)ā¦ His SAT is 1580, and two subject scores of 800 (math and physics). He codes since the time he remembers himselfā¦ Is there anything where he should apply, within Va Tech? (He is from TJHSST). Thanks for advice!
How do you find the total cost? I saw some people post. When I look at our financial aid my son got a tech grant and the loans but I didnāt see a total cost? There was only an estimate gathered from a student survey it said.
@ElenaParent As long as he filled out the scholarship forms, he should be ok. Give it some time. My son was notified this morning of a $2,000 scholarship from the College of Natural Resources and Environment - which was a nice surprise. Good luck!
@AAA124555 Galileo and Hypatia are the Engineering LCC.
Hey yāall, I got in EA and figured Iād share stats.
