I agree with above. It’s still staying on S19’s list because it’s a great school but that OOS price will be tough. The accepted students day will be very important for him/us.
I agree with the sentiments above. VT was top 2 for our son. 36 ACT, NMF, 4.64 GPA, 13 AP classes, Eagle Scout, Varsity athlete, tons of leadership and service.
VT offered him the least merit of any school by more than $20,000 per year.
We expected less money from Clemson and more from VT. He really loved the CMDA program, but it’s just not worth the extra $80,000-$120,000.
anomy27 Thank you for the Honors update. One less factor for weighing stuff.
@collsander, That’s exactly what my daughter said was important to her: she wanted to be wanted. She is going to Ohio State, which is also a popular school with a great engineering program, but they still invest in smart OOS students and offer good merit aid. It will be $80-$100K less expensive. That’s huge. I’m sure VT has no problem filling their classes because there are so many strong in-state students and enough OOS students willing to pay the upcharge. Based on many posts to this discussion, it seems like there are an increasing number of high achieving students who would be great additions to VT’s class profile and certainly boost their admissions stats, but they are getting substantially better offers from competing schools. Over time, this will have an effect on their national reputation.
@kmnmom Great call on OSU - it’s an excellent school, and $20K/year discount on a high-quality education is really a no-brainer. Your daughter will love it - beautiful campus, amazing school spirit.
@kmnmom congratulations to you daughter on OSU. We know many who attend there. My son is still weighing VT however NC State has done more to make him feel wanted. We have not yet received the full financial but he was awarded a scholarship if he changes to a dual degree program of Paper Science and Chemical Engineering instead of just Chem E. He received a very nice merit award from Univ of Delaware and Private schools like Steven’s Institute.
He is will decided after attending accepted students day.
@collsander, sounds like your son has some great optons available to him. We visited NC State. That library - wow! All of those schools are sure to provide him with an excellent education and overall college experience. I can imagine you’re lookng forward to having this decision made!
Not to bash on VT, but I think it’s a little ridiculous that students who were accepted EA on 2/22 still have yet to receive a letter or admission packet. That was almost a month ago! The only acceptance info was on that impersonal portal. They pale in comparison to all of the other schools my student has been accepted into.
People should have all received by now as we have had ours like a week. Nothing that great about it anyhow other than getting that letter. Personally I liked how JMU did it having the letter as a downloadable pdf - they could have done that along with the financial aid info.
No admission packet here…or is it only sent if you’ve sent in your deposit?
We just received our admission letter/packet on March14th. (Pi day) (NoVa area) It did, however, take a long time from when the EA decision was received and I have to agree that it was a very impersonal acceptance. My son hasn’t made any decisions yet, so I’m sure they sent them to everyone. If you haven’t received it yet, it should reach you very soon.
I haven’t gotten mine yet in NJ
We haven’t received ours in Colorado but we were regular decision. I’m wondering if they sent EA and RD out together or if we will still be weeks. My son is comparing VT to a couple other schools and it would be nice if they sent it.
Yea I have the feeling they sent them all at once and that’s why EA people saw such a a delay. This is the first time they have done EA and I think majority applied EA and they weren’t really ahead of the game getting all that done early. I’m sure they will learn from their first year doing it.
FYI - not a lot of info in the packet. Much more online.
Son accepted OOS PA and applied EA. No packet yet. VT is not high on his radar currently and I think it is because he hasn’t had any direct communications such as an official acceptance packet. Northeastern and NC State both sent welcome packets immediately and Northeastern included a very nice merit scholarship. I am personally a bit disappointed in VT.
All, I completely understand your disappointment with the lack of merit-aid and no honors. But please don’t let your dissatisfaction with VT’s admission packet (or lack thereof) be a deciding factor in choosing a college program.
@pamom414 I am too I think it would be helpful to send a little “rah rah we’re excited to have you” He’s gotten that from every other school (except the one he’s still waiting to hear from which is Tech’s biggest competition). Well, I will say, U of Colorado did take a month or more to send the big welcome packet but they sent a lot more welcome emails…
Still no packet in Atlanta. UGA sent there’s out two days after acceptances were released and each student gets a free pair of UGA socks with their letter, very cool.
Correction: far from free!
@Avesalius congrats on your student getting into UGA!! We lived in Atlanta before moving to CO 4.5 years ago. My hubby is a Bulldog. UGA has gotten so hard to get into! And it’s got to be way less than Va Tech with the Hope scholarship…
