Rumor has it (at least where I'm around from) that Extra Curriculars are really good for getting you into UCLA, and being ASB President is close to an instant admission (as long as you have decent stats, and even then....) Any thoughts?

Not even. That wasn't the case for our school.

My anecdotal evidence supports this.

lets hear it.

Sure, I only have two stories though, both from last year.

1) Average stats, 3.7ish GPA, SAT I in the mid 1900s, alright SAT IIs but the president of dragonboat club for two years (competed statewide and won many awards)

2) Not sure about this guy's stats.. but he was a pot head nationally ranked debater. (Right now he's in trouble at UCLA for being caught with pot)

Both got into UCLA.

to counter your evidence:
my friend last year was elc and asb vp and did not get in to la but got into berkeley. boy are uc's random

the asb president at my school didnt get into ucla....

the asb president at my school got in.

mine didnt. i dont think it is a legit theory

asb one at my school got in

Nah, I refute this theory as well. I think SATs, GPA and ELC have more weight. My extracurriculars are iffy, but my SATs and GPA were pretty high, and I was ELC, so I got in. One of my friends, who has skimpy extracurriculars (just CSF and NHS), but was ELC and had a high GPA and below average SAT score (1800s) got into UCLA as well.

what is ASB??? I got crap stats and surprisingly got in. i think it was my ecs or essays. i thought i wouldnt get in given that i am out of state!

EC's are playing an ever increasing role (hollistic admissions). but there are no guarantees.

You don't want to be the average applicant...I can tell you that much.

Well I think now that UCLA is taking a different approach to admissions your extracurriculars matter. My daughter had a 4.0+ GPA but her sat1 was 1980.
Her satII combined score was 1470. Now she had extracurriculars in scholl with kiwins, nhs, and amnesty intnl. She also had outside curriculars in Hospital volunteering and board member and lastly she had vp position board member at her other volunteering spot. This got her into...ucla, ucsd, ucberkeley and ucsb. Also CMC and scripps. So yes I think the extra curricluars did work to her favor
