I am extremely involved in my research (for the Siemens competition), and plan on listing it on the Common- App. However, I do not meet my mentor often but work on my own in school (I have a special hour devoted to it every day). When I write how many hours I do it, do I write 5/week (or the equivalent) or only write how often I officially work with my mentor?

The Common App is fairly vague on hours/week, however I generally understand it to mean the time you dedicate to actually participating whatever that EC slot is. If you are doing research for 5 hours a week, then you would write 5 hours per week. If you'd like, you could call Common App or an admissions office to get a specific answer of what they'd want.

depends on the college. I know for a fact that Stanford does not want one. Most colleges will accept them though so make sure to do your research

What if it's kind of hard to put hours/week? For example, I technically do my research in the shower, while in the car, while trying to sleep etc. It basically involves me playing around with different ideas. This is definately a big part of my research, and always thinking about it is what gives me ideas on how to move forward. While I don't necessarily allot x hours everyday, I still do my research everyday, whether it be reading, thinking, etc. What would I put?

^ That's like my Siemens project too. At the end I just ended up putting down the hours when I was actually sitting down and writing out something for my project. I guess I can let the "thinking" process go by. If I literally included all the time of thinking in random places, the figure will be probably something like 8 hours a day (56 hours a week?!). I didn't think that was reasonable.

And also, don't send an abstract/resume to Yale. They specifically said it on their website as well.

^ Oh oops sorry. I meant "supplementary material." I neglected the fact that they had a spot on the supplement for abstracts.

I was referring more to the "Brag Sheet" types that you can tack on as additional info - there is a website on Yale Admissions that frown upon it when I applied to Yale last January.
