I’m a Kelley DA and am going to be a freshman in the fall. This class was one of the only ones that fit into my schedule. I know typically sophomore and juniors take this class, but my advisor allowed me to take it but warned me of the difficulty. Can anyone give me information on how to pass this class? I’ve read the ratings on the professor and the majority are pretty bad, so I’m really nervous to take it.
Thanks for the help!
I would steer clear of the class. Do any sections of S301 fit in your schedule? Coming from a person who got an A in the class last semester, it was the worst class I have ever taken in my life. It is a flipped class which basically means the teacher doesn’t teach. She has voice over powerpoints that are awful. The only reason I did well in this class is because I had smart friends who I would do the in class work with. Half the class is free points because she has to do it that way because she doesn’t teach. The class isn’t a lot of work because the material is inherently difficult, it’s hard because you have to teach yourself everything. I strongly encourage you not to take E370.
I haven’t taken it yet, but my adviser told me to take STAT-S 301 instead of E370. She did not explain why though. I haven’t heard anything about it, but I do know that almost all of the stats professors get pretty bad reviews on ratemyprofessor. What classes are you taking and what do you have credit for already? Maybe you could move some things around to avoid stats 1st semester. I’d be happy to help out with that if you want.
@kelleykid18 Wow, your experience doesn’t seem very good at all. Thanks for the input, I’ll be talking to my advisor about trying to switch out of the class. Did you take AP Stats/ AP Micro? Did those help at all or was it just bad regardless?
@iubaccounting I’m taking C106, K204, INFO 101, MUS 120, and E 370. I’d love if you could help me move some things around! That’d be great. I also have credit for micro, macro, calc, finite, w131, and I have my gen eds for history and natural science completed already. I spent 2 hours in my advisor’s office just trying to get things to work.
@sweetgeek25 Why are you taking the informatics and music classes? If you are going to work towards a minor, that makes sense. But if you are just taking those classes because you are interested in them, it might work better to move one to next semester since your schedule is not working right now. It’s a little tough to find replacements because most of the I-Core pre req classes are full other than A100 and T175, so you could try to add both of those.
Another option would be to take a World Culture or A&H gen ed class, or one that double counts. There should still be plenty of these classes open and at various times, plus it helps you progress towards your degree. Those are the only 2 options I can think of, but there are a ton of gen ed classes to choose from if you want to do that. Try not to worry about it too much, and 1st semester of freshman year was by far my hardest semester to schedule so far.
Also, if you have actually taken AP stats like the last post sort of suggested, you’d probably be fine in E370. You’re going to have to take stats eventually, and the material from stats and finite will never be fresher in your mind than it is now.

@iubaccounting It was weird- with the honors block first semester, my adviser wouldn’t let me take a100 or t175. So he suggested that I just take “fun” classes instead. Piano fulfills 3 credits of my a&h requirement, and informatics is a class that I want to see if I like (possible minor).
I’m waiting to receive AP credit for Spanish, so if I test well enough, hopefully I won’t have to take World Culture/Language. Earlier when I scheduled I tried to add Spanish 280 but the Spanish department wouldn’t let me because I tested in 300 level course. None of the 300 levels fit and they wouldn’t let me go down.
I think I’m going to just stick with it because, you’re right, finite and stats material will never be fresher. Hopefully all goes well. But thank you immensely for all your advice throughout!
You’re welcome. For what it’s worth, I took A100 1st 8 weeks with the honors block and it wasn’t a big deal. They wouldn’t let me take T175 and A100 with the honors block either, but it would’ve been fine. You’re obviously a really good student if you made it into the ACE program, so I don’t see any reason why you can’t handle E370. Also, just know that it will be easier to schedule in future semesters when you have the advantage of having a lot of credits. Good luck!
