I'm currently a freshmen at UCSD as an Economics major at Warren college and if anyone could give me some schedule advising and/or recommended teachers I would appreciate it.

Here is my proposed schedule:

Math 20C
ECON 1
COGS 3 or COGS 11
SDCC 1 or WC 10A (depends if i pass the Writing test)

Anyone know any easy but enjoyable PofC classes? or have any comments on my schedule?

Oh, sweet. This is almost my exact schedule for my first quarter as an economics major (also in Warren :P).

I took Econ 1, Math 10C, and Cogs 3, and that’s it. Only three classes. It was very easy and I had a ton of free time. Even if you take WCWP 10A, that probably adds only maybe 4 hours of work (excluding in-class time) a week?

10C was a cake walk, so I can’t tell you much about 20C except that you’ll probably do well considering you’ve probably also taken Calculus AB/BC in high school. Cogs 3 is really easy as well; my professor for that class was Mary Boyle. She is pretty awesome and the assignments are basically step-by-step instructions on what exactly to type and do. Econ 1 is also not too bad. I had Professor Lili Xie, and the homework and tests aren’t too difficult. Make sure you thoroughly go over class slides and read the book regularly; studying the night before will not cut it for any econ course. I would recommend Antonovics, even though I’ve never taken her, some of my friends have and said she was pretty good. I also encourage you to find people in your class to study with. It’ll make it easier to understand concepts and you’ll be more focused with other people.

My PofCs are in Humanities (a variety of music, art, literature, etc courses) and computer science (specifically CS, and not the technology PofC, because taking both the Humanities and Technology PofCs is not accepted). I very much enjoy these classes, so take what you’re interested in rather than what’s the easiest for you. If you are interested in philosophy, or history, take it, even if taking music is easier. If both of those happen to coincide, great (it did for me, with music classes).

Because I ended up switching to a CS PofC, my Cogs 3 class basically didn’t apply to anything except extra GE credits, so I would suggest deciding on a PofC pretty early. It’s easiest to do this with the Humanities PofC, because you can choose from a large amount of different subjects from the beginning.

As adamantoise said, we really need to know what your PofC is going to be. My advice is to find what you want to minor in since it’ll probably only require 1-2 more classes and a minor can replace the PofC requirements.

A lot of freshmen don’t know this, but there are two specialized PofC. The “humanities” PofC and the “Science and Technology” PofC. These allow you to take courses from a variety of topics under that section. So say you choose the humanities PofC, you’re allowed to take a variety of courses from music, philosophy, ethnic studies, etc.

Wow I appreciate the help already. Yeah, my PofC would definitely be more towards something in the natural sciences column. Im not a big fan literature and philosophy and the stuff that seems to be in the humanities. Reading more about science and technology PofC that seems to fit me perfectly, but instead of COGS 3 now i should take COGS 11 or something now to help fulfill 1/6 of the courses ill need for that PofC.

And also I will not have to pick another PofC now (from Humanities or Social Sciences) correct because Science and Technology will cover all that I need from its requirements because it is “specialized”?

Does anyone know how difficult the classes such as ECE and Chemistry are for example? It seems like they are almost just intro classes?

You still need to do a humanities/fine arts PofC along with a Natural Science/Math/Engineering PofC. Typically for a PofC, you can choose one subject in that section and take 6 courses in it. (Hence, concentration)

If you want the specialized science and technology PofC, that means you dont need to concentrate in one subject. So you can take some chem classes, some ECE classes, and some cogsci classes. But it would also mean you need to take 6 classes in one subject such as music. This is because you aren’t allowed to do both specialized PofC

“May not be used if Humanities or Perspectives of Social Science is the other PofC.”

Ok got it, I will probably do history then as well, do you think I should mix my schedule with courses from each history and the Science and Technology PofC or should I just stick to Sci and Tech and finish that first.

You can take it in any order you want. Personally, I would take the classes that interest you in case you want to change majors. You can also decide to get a history minor since its only one more class.

I would also consider whether a minor in one of those topics may help your career path instead of doing a random PofC. As an econ major, you can consider a math minor instead of the science and technology PofC since it is helpful for a lot of jobs. (Which is why there is a joint major) Taking a language minor instead of the history PofC may be helpful as well. There are a lot of options so plan carefully. (Unfortunately the business and accounting minor cannot be used for a PofC)
