@colscook There certainly are ED scholarship recipients! There’s one girl in my scholarship class who is ED. That said, you are correct in that RD applicants have a higher chance of receiving scholarships (or at least the academic-based ones- not sure about Danforth, Ervin, etc.). At least, that’s what the dean of engineering told me.
For what it’s worth, @colscook , I had my D ask her rep. about this because I was thinking like you are. He said they do not use the scholarships to sway but to reward. I am not sure I believe him, but that was the answer.
Good luck to your d!
My daughter just applied Early Decision! It’s more of a relief than a worry after much consideration. Has anyone else here applied already?
not yet, but best of luck @Winky1
My D has… Best of luck
Best of luck to all the ED applicants. Lots of opportunities and fun stuff to do at WashU.
And if anyone to message me privately about their chances, feel free to do so. I remember my son going through the ED process last year. Do your best this semester and try not to stress over things as much as possible.
Thanks @Hamurtle
@JemmaSimmons , thanks for your input. Hope you are having a great start to your freshman year.
Do you consider the merit scholarships based on major the academic ones? My daughter will be applying for the Moog Scholarship, for example. And you are saying that grades and GPA are very important for those? While the Danforth is designed to be open to considering other factors?
@Winky1 Yep, the major specific scholarships are the ones I’m calling academic scholarships, although all of the scholarships WashU offers have academics as a component of consideration. Generally, if you read the descriptions of each of the major specific scholarships, they will mention passion for the academic subject, previous success in it, research, ACT/SAT, etc. These contrast with the Ervin, Danforth, and Rodriguez, which also mention service, character, diversity, etc.
Has anyone been contacted for an alum interview?
Yes my daughter was contacted. She hadn’t requested one
@Parent FL , mine was too, and she had not requested one either. Not that it’s a problem at all! Curious, did your D have an on campus interview as well? Mine did. The more the merrier!
Yes she had an on campus interview. Good luck to your D.
Thanks. Same to yours!
@Winky1 and @ParentFL, I guess that is a good sign that your daughters were contacted for additional interviews. I don’t remember the son being contacted for an additional interview last year after his on-campus interview.
Interviews with WashU alumni are beginning this week so I would suggest signing up for one if you haven’t done so.
I mentioned this before in another post, but make sure to check any letters from WashU. My son got a letter from one of the professors in the programs he is interested in (forgot the name offhand but it’s for students who are are interested in combining a science and liberal arts major) and actually met a couple of professors during his second WashU visit. One of the professors actually remembered him during Bear Beginnings this August when we were visiting the department.
Maybe students are contacted for alum interviews if there are enough alum reps in an area? I take it as all good to talk and ask questions.
@ParentFL , my D got a postcard in the mail today explaining she’ll be contacted by an alum for an interview. It would’ve all made better sense if the postcard would’ve come before the alumni contacted her. I’m sure your D will be getting the same postcard if she hasn’t already. Just an FYI in case anyone else gets contacted before the postcard arrives.
Does anyone know when ED decisions came out last year? They say Dec. 15th, but I think it’s usually a little earlier than that.
I think it was around 12/10
