EDers with LOW SATs

lol, a 4 on AP Bio is nothing to be ashamed of. It's a tough test. I have seven 5s, so imagine how I must have felt when I had to cut three 5s off... well, I'm thankful I was able to do so well anyway, so whatever..

if you are around 50th percentile, is that considered low? i've had people telling me you need to be at least OVER the 75th percentile to have a chance. I have a 1410/2080, 1520 top two sat 2s. do i have a shot?

Of course you have a shot.. it doesn't make sense to HAVE to be over the 75th percentile, unless you have below average grades and ECs.. Your SAT IIs are especially impressive. Don't worry, your SATs definitely don't put you out of the running or anything..

75th percentile is a guideline for those of us who aren't legacies, recruited atheletes, or extremely wealthy...

and besides the 75% marker is blurred this year because of the transition to the new sats... i wonder how many kids applying have 2400 + 2x800? it would be interesting to see if that's how they consider it...

In such a big school, you really think that recruited atheletes, legacies, and extremely wealthy people make up 50% of the applicants? I'm not sure about that..

yeah you all are being unrealistic, 75th percentile is the 75th percentile for a reason its mich greater than the avergae

if you meet the range (1330-1510 i believe), you should be competitive for admission just based on your SAT score. I'm sure that they look past your SAT score once you have met the range though, probably placing a greater emphasis on your transcript.

WHOOO... 75th percentile :) and no you misunderstood my analysis, i said 75, as do many others because legacies, recruited athletes, and wealthy students (who don't make up 50% of all students) bring the average down slightly, so if you assume that for every 2 or 3 1500's, there is one at 1300... it would bring the average to a lower 1450, which means even tho most of the people 3/4 are at 1500, it says the true average is 1450, which if you had that you would be below average...

make more sense?

How "incredible" would ur EC's have to be to make up for a 2000 SAT??

You have to have the last name Clinton, first name Chelsea.

...that's great

If you have a score over 1950, I think your competitive for admission. I dont think you necessarily need to have "perfect" ec's, but just Ec's that show your passion towards certain things. Dont place too much weight on the SAT though, the transcript is where students truly shine (that in accordance with class rank).

Whew....ok.

Thankfully, I feel really confident in my EC's.

Maybe I shoulda applied as a recruit...do you have to be REALLY good? or do they just take normally good (nothing AMAZING, but still formidable) people?

I'm applying ED with a 31 ACT Score. In many ways I was preoccupied with my extracurriculars and postponed taking the test until the last possible day before applying ED, leaving me no opportunity to retake.
I'm hoping that my unique extracurriculars and hooks will compensate for this deficit.

I think 40% of the app is testing refers not only to SAT and SAT IIs, but also to transcript.

As far as needing to be over the 75th percentile in testing - I know some ppl disagree but I think that's actually pretty accurate for those without hooks. Legacies, athletes and big donors may get in with lower scores but ppl with geographic and economic diversity as well as those with non-athletic special talents may too. When all those ppl are added in, it starts to get harder for the rest of the pool!!

i haven't read the last 4-6 posts, but i just want to point something out. about the 25/75, i though schools were have been finding all kinds of loopholes to make the reported range higher than the actual range. i thought at least athletes weren't in that range....children of large donors i don't believe are in there either...so it actually may be both A) a little higher, but B) Actually better, cuz the bottom 25 isnt athletes, etc., but students like u!! ;)

Also, i was talking to my US history teacher, and she told me a funny story:

Ah, Dartmouth. home of animal house.
Anyway, my teacher (no particular genius of her own accord...) had her older brother admitted to Dartmouth as a baseball recruit. He didn't end up going (cuz i guess he wanted a full scholarship elsewhere?), but this is what she told me, and u can piece all this together:

-he is dam good (got a major league call up)
-his scores were lower than hers
-she (a recruited athlete) couldn't get a full ride to Jacksonville University
-i'm guessing she was about 3.7, 1230 or lower
-she ended up going to florida atlantic university, where her bro ended up at
-they took the same classes, cuz he still hadn't passed them...this is FA frickin U

so, maybe this gives u an idea of what the process can be like sometimes...idk. i though it was funny and felt compelled to share that tidbit of info

Ya? Maybe there's hope for me after all then (darn it...I shoulda applied as a recruit).

darn it...i should have learned to play a sport

Hey 26e, I just noticed you were a fellow Floridian. What part??

SW...port charlotte

u?
