My son received his second ELC letter today, this time from UC Davis. The first letter did not specify which UC school he would be offered admission to. Did anyone received more than one letter yet, from a specific UC? It appears that each school sends out these second letters on the specific school's letterhead that's offering them admission.

Nope…just UCD today also.

When I was in 12th grade I’m pretty sure I received letters from 2 UC’s and also a couple CSU’s.

Also a general ELC letter and a UC Davis letter at our house.

Last year my son got the general ELC letter and then letters from UC Davis, UCI and UC Santa Barbara saying that if he applied he would be admitted. And then a lot of other UC’s (like UCSD) sent him letters “encouraging” him to apply. Actually I think they sent him emails too. But I had gone on Santa Barbara and UCI’s websites and figured out they were going to automatically admit ELC’s before some of the letters actually arrived.

Got the UCD letter and I also got a postcard from UCSB. UCD offered guaranteed admission to any major while UCSB only offered guaranteed admission with but no guarantee of a specific college or major.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what kind of stats (GPA, test scores) does one need to be ELC?

Thanks.

To be ELC you must be in the top 4% of your class. From the UC website: “To be eligible in the local context, a student must attend an eligible school that participates in the program, have his or her transcript submitted to UC with the high school’s ELC submission packet, satisfactorily complete a specific pattern of 11 UC-approved courses by the end of the junior year and be ranked in the top 4 percent of his or her high school class according to UC ELC evaluation rules.” To see the rules: [Submission Information](http://www.ucop.edu/sas/elc/requirementsinfo.html)

But also make sure that your high school is “an eligible school that participates in the program”. I was shocked at how many schools in our city did not participate.

Thanks tx5!

That’s also mentioned in the link.

FYI, I just looked at our file from last year- my daughter got a guaranteed admission (“in most majors”) letter from UC Irvine that was mailed 10/19/09.

BTW, I encourage parents of Calif. juniors who are reading this thread to check with your student’s guidance counselor in May. There’s a form that parents need to sign in order to release the student’s transcript for ELC consideration. At our school we got the form in May and had to return it by early June. If this form gets buried in a backpack, your child might not get ELC even if they would otherwise be eligible.

I’m just wondering because I’m in the ELC but I never got a letter from UC Davis… Does that happen?

Yes, but it doesn’t mean you are not guaranteed admission. A friend called the admissions office and was told they didn’t send letters to everyone because of the expense. Not sure how they select which ELC students to send the letter to.

^^ If you’re interested in UCD - contact them, tell them you’re ELC, and are wondering what your acceptance status would be there - i.e. if they automatically accept all ELC people. While you’re at it you can say that you didn’t receive a letter from them but you know others who have and you’re wondering if there’s a reason why you haven’t received one.

Essential to check this out, but a lot of schools seem to take care of this form without parental involvement.

Possible, but not smart since that would be a violation of California privacy laws (for anyone under 18).

fwiw: our HS sends the form home to EVERY rising Junior with all the fall registration materials, including vaccinations, etc.

DITTO

D’s high school called and faxed the form when they submitted her for ELC.

I think they had us sign something at some point, but I couldn’t tell you what or when.

I only mention it so that folks don’t freak out or blame schools regarding a missed opportunity. Our ELC experience was in '07, and it seems like every year, like us, folks find out info was submitted without them realizing it.

Maybe I should have capitalized and bolded “SEEM TO”!
