To be an ELC you must be in the top 3% of your graduating class, correct? Is that measure based on your most current standing or your cumulative GPA? I ask this becuase every semester my high school re-calculates the rankings. Last semester i was 34/500 now i’m 5/500. When i’m a senior next year would the ELC people ( I don’t know how else to phrase that, sorry!) just take my current standing which woudl come from my second semester junor grades or what?

If not this board, where should i refer my questions too? thanks…

it's top 4%, as measured by transcript gpa and calculated to UC-standards, 'a-g' courses, bonus point for UC-approved honors and AP, and re-calculated by UC. Only Soph and Jr grades are used. UC notifies ELCs in late Sept.

I think it's the UC GPA based on your coursework, not necessarily the one you see on your transcript:

the University will identify the top 4 percent of students on the basis of GPA in UC-approved coursework completed in the 10th and 11th grades.

ELC Requirements

GPA ≥ 2.8
Must be designated by UC evaluators as being in top 4% of participating high school graduating class
Must complete 11 UC-approved courses by end of junior year.
The 11 units include:

History/Social Science 1 year

English 3 years
Mathematics 3 years
Laboratory Science 1 year
Language Other than English 1 year
Additional Courses from the "a-g" Subject Requirement 2 years

the university will do none of that. instead, it asks your school for a list, and upon your agreement, your school will send them your transcripts and info

See the following link for measurement of the top 4%. As I posted earlier, the UC's look at your grade report (i.e, transcript, but I think many schools send an electronic file), and only calculate the top 4% on the UC-approved courses, which includes ALL a-g courses that you have taken in Soph and Jr years. In accordance with normal UC policy, bonus points are added to the ELC calculation for UC-approved Honors and AP courses, even if your HS does not weight grades.

The courses that Teal outlined above are the minimum that must be completed for ELC consideration. They are not the only ones used for calculating the top 4%. It they were, there would be a long, long list of ties at most above average HS.

No, I bolded the answer to masha's question about calculation of UC GPA.
I only copy-and-pasted extra information from the site so masha knows the eligibility requirements if s/he did not already know; that's why it says ELC requirements above all of the courses.

GPA is changing for Class of 2006. Too many kids are eligible. According to the Master Plan of Higher Education, only 12.5% (one-eighth of high school students) should be eligible for admission into UC. Right now, it's about 14%.

eg - actually, the gpa change affects the matriculating class of '07, minimum for state residents increases from 2.8 to 3.0, but UC may make minor adjustments depending on admissions impact of new SAT scores.
