email about Nonresident Alien Tax Compliance thing...

<p>i just got this email..but I'm not sure what it's really for...it tells me to use GLACIER to submit some kind of forms..did anyone get this??</p>

<p>What is the subject line of the email? GLACIER is used to fill out tax filing and exemptions information for international students. There is a form you have to fill out and return to the 5th floor office in New South.</p>

<p>i got the mail as well. its a ****ing pain in the ass. you have to fill out the damn thing and then send it to somebody. and the fact that ive forgotten my SEVIS form at home doesnt really help...</p>

<p>And if you don't have an American social security number, you'll have to apply for one and send it to them - they <em>will</em> hound you for it. Don't think green card holders are affected.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, Princeton does not run the United States (yet), and so it can't issue social security numbers (nor green cards ... darn!). There will be a session sometime in September where the relevant people come in and hold a SSN registration orgy. You should have ready photocopies and originals of your passport, I-20, maybe I-94, and almost certainly other stuff which I have forgotten. Your SSN will then be mailed to you, assuming all goes well.</p>

<p>Yes, your I-20 is extremely important. You'll also have to remember to get it signed in West College at the end of every year or you would be allowed back in the US after you go home for summer.</p>

Seriously, the guy was actually quite nice, which is surprising. My experience of US Customs is that they're typically rude and desperately looking for a reason to throw you out of the US.
I still don't understand why you need the I20. I've got an F1 Visa and to get that, I needed to show my I20. Isnt the visa proof that you've got an I20?</p>

<p>Don't ask me how US immigration works. All I know is that there's a big database of foreign students (SEVIS? I'm guessing, as usual), and your I-20 has something to do with that. I think theoretically the immigration officer should check your I-20 against your SEVIS record, because everytime I enter, it takes bloody ages.
I have a friend who's Palestinian and US customs gave him all kinds of hell.</p>
