Emory ed1 class of 2020

@Oliea98 nice to meet you! I’m 40 min north of atlanta!
@bernie12 thank you. My essays are actually both kind of about the same thing. My long essay is about how I was diagnosed with several diseases sophomore year and how I got myself out of that hole and my short emory essay is about me being misdiagnosed with cancer and having to go to surgery because of it and kind of ties in to the medical field. But besides that I’m kinda all over the place blush I just like almost everything I do and I guess it portrays that in my app.

If anybody is wondering, Emory accepts test scores until Nov. 30 for EDI. I just got my scores back from the October ACT and wasn’t sure if they would reach Emory in time, so I called Emory and they told me they would accept test scores until the 30th!

Hello! I also applied ED 1 for Emory. I want to major in neuroscience and possibly become in neuroscientist/surgeon in the future. I belong to the first generation in my family that go to colleges. I am wondering about my chances of getting to Emory.

SAT: 2200 (Verbal: 720 Math: 780 Writing: 700) Superscored: 2230
SAT Subject Test: Math Level 2: 800 Biology: 700
IB: 36 (I mess up my IB score in Chinese last year, just don’t know how they value this score, I guess it will definitely hurt a little bit since I heard that Emory College usually accepts students score above 38)
Major: Neuroscience/Mathematical Sciences
Ethnic: Asian

@Starlight97
Hello there!
I want to be a neurosurgeon too!
Looking at your standardized testing I would say those are spot on for emory. However, that is definitely not the only thing they will look at. I have visited many times and spoken with their admissions counselors and the first thing they tell me is don’t just look at the numbers when evaluating yourself. They want their students to be dedicated to learning and love it general. They also want people show I’ll add to their school and participate in it. Does this sound like you? What are your extra curriculars like?
Also, they weigh GPA more heavily than standardized testing. They want to know if you are good in a classroom and work hard, not if you know how to take a test. I know it’s hard trying to show that but I’ve found that the best way to convey that is by being yourself in any part of the application where you can put in your own answer ie your essays and explanations.
Hope that helps!

@Starlight97 : Huh? There is an absolute IB score? That is interesting and I suppose Emory doesn’t care “that” much (they aren’t like: “oh no, you didn’t get at least a 38”). They just want to see that you took some higher level IB’s and got 5,6, or 7 on them…I think your chances are good. I would admit you because of the 2200 which is not as common in ED1, but sometimes they deny these students :frowning: . You need to list EC’s however. Emory isn’t a stats whore school so it really isn’t enough info. They are willing to take an Asian with much lower stats than you if they have better EC’s or an interesting story to tell. First generation will certainly help, but not if they don’t think you’ll have something to contribute to the school.

Also, with your interest in Neuroscience/Mathematical Sciences: You apply to Emory at the right time. Perhaps you could help to increase the number of concentrators here: http://quantitative.emory.edu/prospective/qssmajor/

Click on the “biology” option. It offers a neuro concentration. I would recommend qmm over pure math as it has a more relevant approach for those who are willing to consider research in any science (plus some of the elective courses are just cool, such as computational linguistics, computational modelling, physical biology, computational neuroscience, and some of the QSS classes like game theory!). You can basically do this and a full neuroscience major as some electives for this are also neuroscience electives. And classes like chemistry, biology, and physics also go toward the neuroscience major. You’ll just have to complete the NBB core plus a few more electives and you get both.

Thanks for your answer! That’s really helpful to me. Here are some of my ECs, most of them are volunteer work since I very dedicated to help people.

  1. Volunteer at the animal shelter(give them vaccines/look for new homes for homeless pets)
  2. Teaching assistance for children (English/Chinese/Singing/Cooking/Drawing)
  3. President of "Pseudoscience"Club, testing rumors mainly
  4. Summer Program related to neuroscience at Duke University
  5. Environmental Studies

I think those are pretty solid ECs! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing only volunteer work, if thats what you love then that’s what you love and that’s great!

This chat is so awesome. It is great getting to meet everybody and hear about potential classmates. I wish you all the best of luck! I hope more people join this discussion.

Did anyone take Emory summer program?

@zzljrmy008, no I didn’t fit my schedule. Did you?

Yep I took microeconomics this summer at Emory… Hopefully that can raise my chances

@zzljrmy008 thats awesome, I am taking it now through Syracuse University. What are your stats? What do you want to study?

Lol you guys are making me nervous with your stats, I don’t think I can take another month! And I expected a lot of pre-med/science applicants, but there seems to be a lot of neuroscience applicants in particular. One of my best friends applied neuroscience too!

@Oliea98 did you apply ED? What are YOUR stats? The next 29 days, 20 hours, 9 minutes, and 39 seconds (December 15, 2015) are going to be agonizing…

You guys all bring a smile to my face

@ismitah same here, I look forward to posts in this discussion. It is both exciting and nerve racking to see all the amazing and deserving competition out there.

@NeuroDude haha yeah, I actually wrote out a whole lot but it only posted my first line. Don’t know why that happened but anyways.
I’m nervous excited about college in general. I’ve never spent a night without my family so I don’t know what I’m gonna do when I have to stay in a dorm.
Are any of you involved in any cool clubs? I would love to hear about them, it shows character!
I myself am the communications coordinator for my schools Mock Trial team. I’ve done it all four years and I love it!

@ismitah yeah, it will be a tough adjustment. I am the President and Founder of my school’s chemistry club, the co-VP and co-homecoming chair for my class, treasurer of French Club, a part of international club, member of Med Cross club, member of Physics Research Club, and President of National Honor Society. I am also a fencer! What else do you do?

@NeuroDude oh wow! You’re imvolved in so many things. Mock trial is my biggest extra curricular commitment for school but I’m also in science Olympiad, HOSA, FCCLA, and Beta club. I have a class for FCCLA too, which is great because all we do is cook and eat. Outside of school I worked at Barnes and Noble for a year, which I absolutely loved. Right now I am tutoring a girl on the weekends for spanish 2. I’m not involved in too many things really, mostly because of my health and my family responsibilities. But yeah, that’s me.

@ismitah that’s all really cool. That FCCLA Class sounds pretty fun! I work at the movie theater and I work one on one with a fourth grader with special needs and I started with him three years ago. I love Spanish, I am in Spanish class now actually haha. I want to minor in Spanish in college. I have always loved language and want to further my education in it. What were your favorite parts about Emory?
