Emory ed1 class of 2020

@NeuroDude
I love language too! I speak somewhere around 5…
Almost everything about emory is something I love. I love the freedom and growth that they encourage. I like the research aspect and the courageous inquiry best. I’m someone who asks way too many questions and it’s nice to know that there’s a school out there that encourages that! I thing their food is great and it’s so nice that they are Eco friendly.
I like Oxford because it’s a good transition school for me, it’s very nurturing.

I practically like everything so it’s easier to list the few things I wish they would change. I hope they allow freshman in the near future to have cars. I know they have a great transportation system but I want to be able to go on a last minute weekend getaway or visit my family whenever I like. Also, the dorms are super tiny. They are the traditional freshman dorms found at every other school but it’s just so stifling! There’s not much natural light or air. A few minutes away, at GSU (my second choice) their housing for honors college freshman is so nice! They have their own rooms so it’s apartment style and I think it would be easier to live there than in the traditional rooms.

Besides those two small things, it’s all love for Emory. Whenever I visit I have to hold back and not lead the tour and let the student aid lead it xD
I love the diversity and green space. The professors and faculty are always helpful. I like how it’s an academic school but people still know how to have fun. The first time I visited it was the week before midterms at Oxford and they had music and a bouncy house on the quad.
It’s just small things like that which have made me fall head over heels for this school. Even if I’m never an alum, it’ll always be special for me because all of my doctors who are so invested and wonderful, are emory grads.

So what about emory made it the right choice for you?

@NeuroDude I hope you get in you sound like someone who would really add to Emory

@ismitah : Meh…overly nice dorms are a gimmick to entertain when the academics often fall short. In addition, schools like Emory and GSU have problems with “community” naturally. GSU is a commuter school, and Emory lacks D-1 sports. Emory is likely more effective in alleviating the issue because of the traditional dorms which force interaction between peers in an ideal situation. In addition, there are themed halls that adds an extra layer. Also, separation of honors from non-honors students can hurt more as it leads to even more stratification. It would be the equivalent of Emory providing special housing for scholars. It says “we think these people are so much more special than everyone else that they, not only deserve better sign-up times and EC access, but also better living conditions”. That wouldn’t make sense at Emory where many non-scholars are equivalent in drive and caliber to scholars whether the non-scholar applied for the program or not.

@ismitah I feel the same way about all those things. I went to a class with a friend of mine who is a freshman and it was absolutely amazing. The professor so nice and willing to help me out and answer all questions. I also feel so at home when on those tomorrow’s even know my true home is so many miles away in New York. I am just so obsessed with the school. I check the admission blog every single day and always look for new and interesting forums on here. I also actively keep up to date with the their Twitter and Instagram accounts as often as possible. Every new thing I here or find out about Emory gets me that much more excited about it. Getting in would be the absolute best Hanukkah present ever!!!

@ismitah thanks and same to you

@NeuroDude Yes I did! I have a 30 ACT but I’m unsure about my GPA because my school doesn’t calculate it on a 4.0 scale. Do you guys know if they look at signs in front of letter grades? After freshman year I’ve made all As except for an A- in pre-calc, so I don’t know if it’d be lower or not than a 4.0. And extra-curriculars… I’m founder and President of Music Honor Society at my school, VP of Key Club, I play oboe in concert band, used to march alto sax, I play piano… I’m also in NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, Beta Club and International Club. I also interned at my local outreach center, but it’s not like world renowned or anything lmao

In the long run, dorms aren’t a big deal and I agree. It was just the only thing I could think of that I would change…it just scares me that I’d be living with only one other person, what if we don’t get along? And I know, you can change your mate but it’s still upsetting.

@oliea98 they do look at those Im pretty sure. They revalculate it to their GPA however, which is on a plain 4.0 scale with 1 point added weight for AP/IB

@NeuroDude that’s great! I don’t have any holidays around that time but maybe December 15th will become a day to celebrate anyways!

@ismitah : Well, that’s the point…haha, it is part of dealing with life in general and work things out. It is upsetting, but experiences like it teach and help you learn a lot. College is supposed to be bubble like in many non-academic ways, but in some it isn’t and that is one area where it won’t necessarily be smooth sailing…

I am so excited to hear from potential classmates! You guys’ ECs are pretty amazing. When I was in primary school and middle school, my major ECs are about arts, such as oil painting, calligraphy, watercoloring…I take piano lessons and opera lessons too. I thought I would probably major in art history when I entered college. But after I entered high school, I found myself concentrated more on works such as volunteering or science researches and have completely fell in love with neurosciences. Additionally, I even started to practice meditation from the learning of neurosciences, There are just so much to learn about the brains! Things just change so quick! Feel excited about universities.

Those are some awesome ECs @Starlight97. It is so awesome that we are all so interested in neuroscience! Maybe we will all be in classes together. Are you all going to send your first quarter grades to Emory?

I think it’s up to your counselor but if you ask them they’ll send it. I don’t think I am because I had one C at quarter but now I have it at a B

Does it look bad if you can’t send in first quarter grades? I’m on a block schedule at my school, so I don’t think I could…

@Oliea98 I don’t know…anyone have an answer? I would love to know since I’m debating it myself

I am also on block scheduling and able to send my grades, why would block be a problem?

I don’t think midyear report is required for ED yet. Because I am in IB program, I only know my grade at the end of semester. We even don’t have GPA.

It might vary by school, but because my school’s classes are only a semester long, they only update transcripts by semesters, not quarters…unless I sent a report card or something…

Does Emory University require a mid-year report from freshman applicants?
Yes, all Early Decision II and Regular Decision applicants to Emory/Oxford are required to have their high school guidance counselor submit the mid-year report and updated senior year transcript by January 22 (EDII) or February 15 (RD). One’s counselor needs to complete the Common Application mid-year report when submitting updated grades. The Admission Office does not process mid-year reports or transcripts submitted by the applicant directly. Early Decision I applicants are encouraged to request their counselor submit first quarter grades as soon as they become available.

Everyone needs to give midyear report. For ED1 it’s going to be after admission decision so if you’re accepted it means that they want to make sure you are on track and senioritis hasn’t kicked in I guess

Is anyone else having problems waiting another 22 days? That’s not even counting today or the day of! :!!

You better believe I am. It’s impossible. I have an active countdown on my phone and I am practically glued to it.
