Emory ed1 class of 2020

just realized i can tell the year since that was the only year someone went from my school - 2013

@evhsklu I suspect the average for ED applicants on main is not dramatically different from RD since the overall is apparently a 1430/1600. Given that maybe 15-20% are admitted through the ED rounds. Having 15-20% at a 1310/1600 average would mean that Emory RD admits average something closer to 1500 which I doubt since Emory is not as score centric as other schools. Are they a little lower? Maybe, but not by much. I would say mid-high 13’s for the admits which is consistent with the fact that matriculates typically have an average of about 1370/1600 and half of those are composed of ED students. They yield very little of the RD admits overall and those they yield certainly have lower than the mid-1400 average I suggest (higher scoring kids go to the competition, whether it be other elites or honors programs that gave them money). The fact that the average holds up to a 1370, leads me to believe that ED students are not too much different. Other evidence is the fact that many ED students come for programs that are particularly strong at Emory such as business and the business school has 1370-1380 average. I don’t think the RD group is completely superior academically to the ED students, at least not by a 100 point difference, though this has been shown to be the case at other schools. I just argue that Emory doesn’t aim as high stats wise as other schools in the first place.

@bernie12 Should I be nervous with my stats? 1920(680M 600 CR 640 W) and UW GPA: 3.77?

im VERY nervous with a 2160 sat (700 730 730) and a 3.65 wgpa
the gpa is really what is causing my anxiety, but there is upward trajectory visible on my transcript
i really regret not taking the sat again

@evhsklu I have similar stats to yours. I get nervous bursts, but all we can do now is wait. It’s crazy that I thought tomorrow determined my future. It doesn’t. This is only the ED round. It’s not like we will have no where to go to college. We will all excel and be great leaders wherever we go. Keep your head up everyone!!

guys how does emory calculate gpa

@NeuroDude That’s alright…They’ll likely look (or have looked) at your essays and your EC’s to make a decision. Your stats say that you are “qualified” and “good enough to get in” but not necessarily academically perfect or spectacular versus other students. However, they’ll look for whether or not you are passionate and intellectually (intellectual and academic are different. It’s like the difference between a great scholar and a great student. The two are not in perfect harmony and are often at odds especially in formal schooling) befitting. I mean even if not admitted to either campus, you’ll be able to get into somewhere else pretty good. Certainly don’t feel bad if you don’t but definitely celebrate if you do as many with stats higher than you may very well be turned down, so it means they will have had to see something in you that they didn’t in others .

i have a 3.42 uw gpa with a 2100. Super nervous right now.

do you guys think Oxford will admit more kids and does Oxford ed have lower stats than oxford rd??

@evhsklu Your SAT is very good though.

@pskywalker I believe Emory rounds everything to solid grades, B- or B+ become B’s which is a 3.0. A’s are 4.0, C’s are 2.0’s, etc. I could be wrong.

@whoosh I sure hope they do

@NeuroDude : Interestingly, a student with pskywalker’s stats was admitted to Vandy (a more stats oriented admissions process from what I can tell) so it is possible.

@oskywalker : Oxford always admits a higher percent than the college because their volume is less. And yes, for ed vs. RD though again, probably not a huge difference.

@evhsklu : Taking it again would really have done nothing. Hopefully you have SAT II’s or some AP scores or EC’s (maybe some that show academic talent in an area), which would help more than getting a 2200+ at this point.

@bernie12 I have an extensive resume complete with many club officer positions, awards, honors, community service participation, summer experiences, and other extracurriculars. My librarian said he wanted to use my resume as an example for other students but it had too many things on it that it would make others potentially feel bad. I was also really proud of my supplement. I wrote about my one-on-one work with a special needs boy. I am his aide at a Hebrew School and it is my third year with him. My employer also wrote a letter for me in which she highlighted everything I do for him and the impact I have made on him. I am really hoping that these things help to make up for my lower SAT scores. I do have a 690 on Chem SAT II, 670 on Bio, and 690 on Math 1. Then a 4 on APUSH and AP Lang.

@bernie12 I have an 800 in Math 2 and 800 in Korean. Will this help???

@pskywalker Of course it will help. Those scores are great

@NeuroDude : They will admit you if everything else sticks with them. Emory’s new Dean appears to have been decent at picking students not based on SAT’s which has limited ability to even scout academic performance at a place like Emory (AP, IB, dual enrollment credit is more indicative). I think he knows that there are other ways to look for talent than that. The only reason top schools are still so obsessed with the SAT 1 tests are because of rankings and it can maybe level the playing field for someone who tests well but does not have access to AP/IB or college level courses. The SAT in no way is similar to the types of exams most college (ok, most good professors) professors will give (your best college classes will not give test comprised of 80-100% multiple choice questions). GPA and course rigor are better to gauge performance in challenging course work. Admissions committees can recognize when someone with a lower ACT/SAT score will probably thrive anyway.

Yeah, I have a 4.0 UW GPA, but I feel like my 30 ACT is killing me, especially because there are like three other kids (at least that I know of) that also applied ED I from my school. I got a 36 on writing, but I’m not sure if they even take that score into consideration much or just use it to validate that you were the person that really wrote your app essays. I’ve taken four AP exams but only sent in two scores (5 on Euro and 5 on APUSH), but hopefully since I’m majoring in history that helps. I’m still kind of afraid they will be wondering about the other two scores.

I did not send one of my APs…

Well, when I say “sending” I actually mean just self-reporting them on the common app. Of course I’d send the whole thing in for credit if I get accepted…
