Emory ED1/ED2 Class of 2022

@EllieF I wrote this in another feed, but, are you fast enough to run at either Emory or Oxford? If so, I would recommend you contact the coaches at either (or both) schools as it would give you a great hook.

Is it easier to get accepted to Emory in ED?

@AcademiaSavvy : Statistically, yes. They is a smaller pool as well as a near guarantee for yielding such admits

Just submitted my app. Seems like most people are going into the more bio/med fields such as psychology or chemistry. I’m applying as a math major so do you think This may help my chances?

@peterzin1 : Probably not as QTM grows. Also, math once you count double (with something else as primary major) and joint majors at Emory is quite large and heavily enrolled. If you were applying as a math major with a level of preparation or talent that lands you in the honors sequence, maybe that would help.

IDK whether I qualify for the honor sequence but I applied math and stat and It doesn’t seem like a lot of people really consider EMORY for math. I could definitely see the joint majors being harder to get into since those are generally more popular.

@peterzin1 :Even at schools considered strongly for math, it often is not as highly populated (instead they are highly concentrated with extremely talented math majors who maybe did IMO or made it to the camp) as schools where it is not typically considered (Vanderbilt for example has a very high percentage of math majors). Again, this is one of those majors that is nicely populated by majors. You will not stand out or be particularly attractive for considering it unless you show a deep interest in mathematics in your academic or EC record. The honors sequence just requires a 5 on BC. If you want a significant edge for filling a niche, then it must a) be a major or department not highly populated or you must b) a standout applicant in that area if it is. Emory does not have much of a hard time filling the math department with majors. It isn’t that much of a rarity. Extremely talented students in math (not just high math SAT or AP) considering it is rare.

@peterzin1 : I just found some data. If you removed the business school and nursing (number 1 and 3 major/program at Emory), math would come in at number 5 among undergraduates in ECAS (and it has been growing substantially per year), whether it is primary, joint, or secondary major (For context, at VU,again, a place with lots of math majors it is 5 overall, so I guess at Emory it is 7. And Emory’s undergraduate student body is a bit larger, because Oxford Students contribute to these degree conferral numbers. Last I looked at major distribution stats among schools, VU had a couple of majors over 10% and then it dropped after about the 3rd place position. Emory has many hovering near 10% or well over 5 within the top 10 majors, so it is very concentrated when it comes to these super “serious” major options or majors strongly associated with certain pre-professional paths). Clearly a lot of people come in with interest in math. It is just obviously not the first place for the most talented math students considering graduate school in math (maybe in physics, political science, and economics). The only deficiency I think exists is that there aren’t that many life sciences (bio and neuro) folks interested in math/quantitative approaches at Emory, but it is a big thing. If you are considering any “hardcore/serious” major at Emory minus physics, you are likely not an exception in the applicant pool. So again, while the very best future mathematicians are not considering most Emory tier schools, lots of very strong students interested (or having strong inclinations for) in math are considering it.

Submitted my ED1 app! I didn’t decide until late October that Emory was the one, but after visiting and having a conversation with the cross country coach I made the decision! Good luck to all the other applicants, you are all qualified in different ways and it would be an honor to go to Emory with you!

@runnergamer17
Are you being recruited? I’m not sure how the process works.
What are you planning to study? stats?

I’m also thinking about applying to:

Case Western (EA)
Purdue (EA)
Illinois Urbana Champaign (EA)
Minnesota Twin Cities (EA)
Georgia Tech (RD)
North Carolina Chapel Hill (RD)
Michigan University (RD)

Thank you!

@rayzerj You couldn’t do EA Tech? It might really tricky RD (Engineering units and pre-dominantly STEM schools tend to be much more stats sensitive than schools in their tier and even those technically above them). Ann Arbor? Oh boy for OOS.

You have a shot, but I just wish you had 32-33 on ACT. At least your GPA is stellar. Also, do tons of students at your school have 4.0s? If so, then you will really have to be supported by the rigor of your curriculum. I am personally wondering about the DE courses (will they be equivalent to courses at these level of schools, especially Emory, CW, Michigan, Purdue, and Urbana Champaign, who, other than Emory are known for very serious engineering programs and intensive intro physics and math courses…and also have misgivings about you being interested in Emory since you express interest in engineering. If just science and math, maybe but otherwise you’ll need to choose an ECAS major and then do the Tech 3-2 program. Is there any reason you are interested in Emory. I am not sure it is the best match. Did you have the 3-2 in mind and if so, what was your intended ECAS major?

@rayzerj
You GPA is indeed perfect, however i don’t know what your class rank is so I’m not sure how good it actually is. I assume your applying ED1 to Emory so that should balance your lower ACT score but I’m not sure if that will be enough.
Its a Reach for you. however is Engineering your only focus because Emory does not have it unless its CS, or BME.

@bernie12 I primarily chose Emory because I’m still a little unsure whether I want to go into Engineering or Medical, so I decided to go safe and choose a college with a good program in both. I also just love Atlanta in general. I’ll probably go into computer science or computer engineering through the 3-2 program if I had to choose a specific major.

I guess I technically could’ve done EA, but I felt like committing to Emory would’ve balanced out my low ACT score. (I also wish I had a 32-33 on the ACT haha). Are there other colleges that you think would suit me better? Why do you say oh boy for OOS? Thank you so much.

@VANDEMORY1342 Thanks for the honest chance. Our school doesn’t do class ranks, but I’m fairly confident that there are not too many people with a 4.0. Going medical would be my second option, but I’ll probably go into CS or CE through the 3-2 program.

@rayzerj : There is the biophysics concentration which has a decent amount of computational courses involved. Maybe you can do something interdisciplinary via QTM, physics, or NBB (NBB has the computational neuroscience fellowship for undergrads. and I knew a freshman who somehow got it!) and this would also serve to prep you for something like Georgia Tech, maybe make you stand out if you go pre-med or grad. school, and best of all, stimulate some creative energy and problem solving skills that you won’t necessarily get from taking classes in a singular area and not applying it. As for schools, your list makes sense. I am thinking maybe CW would be a good fit as well, but just wait and see.

@bernie12 I’ll definitely look into it. Thanks for the recommendations!

Anyone else get contacted for an interview? I just got emailed this morning and have an interview next week Wednesday. If anyone has any advice, that would be greatly appreciated!
