@VANDEMORY1342 : Is that fair? ONLY their SAT is unimpressive (within the context of Emory’s admitted states) and even despite that, it is a great score that just so happens to be below the Emory median. Considering there GPA and class rank are excellent, they are basically fine. Emory is more sensitive about GPA and classrank.
It in fact still says on the admissions website:
“SAT and/or ACT scores are important but are not the deciding factors. Strong grades in rigorous courses may cause the committee to overlook below average standardized test scores, but high board scores will never make up for an applicant’s weak course selection or grades.”
This person meets that qualification extremely nicely. I know it may be tempting to want Emory to focus on the scores, but the fact is, they really don’t. Everything else would have to be average or below average for them to probably even look at anything near or over a 1400.
@cadet1 : You have a decent shot, just do not expect anything.
Why are SAT2 subject tests being repeated? They are not an SAT 1. They are mostly for talent measurement. Taking them twice, unless you have two dramatically different sets of scores (suggesting the first attempts were a very off day), will have adcoms scratching their heads because their purpose is not to be gamed like the SAT 1. Furthermore, if the AP courses (which you took right after the course) have not flattering scores (4/5 on math and biology), then it will also look strange. If they already have good scores, there is absolutely no point in retaking SAT2’s as the AP exam scores would trump the scores on SAT 2 equivalents. Even for other schools, the first scores plus related AP would most likely be enough. Think about it from an educational standpoint: You are trying to attend selective universities and colleges that supposedly educate more rigorously than normal in STEM. Do you think the exams given in such courses would only be multiple choice like an SAT2, or do you think they would have a nice mixture of item types like the AP. Showing that you can take an MC test in a subject area vs. AP is just less impressive.
Let us consider this. Collegeboard posts some practice questions and considers this one from Biology subject test as medium difficulty:
“The pH of human blood is slightly basic. Which of the following is most likely to be the pH of human blood?”
On an AP or college level (even at a non-selective), this would be considered easy because it is just fact recall.
Another medium question:
“Which of the following correctly explains how a favorable genetic trait can increase in frequency in a population?”
