Emory ED1/ED2 Class of 2022

@VANDEMORY1342 : Is that fair? ONLY their SAT is unimpressive (within the context of Emory’s admitted states) and even despite that, it is a great score that just so happens to be below the Emory median. Considering there GPA and class rank are excellent, they are basically fine. Emory is more sensitive about GPA and classrank.

It in fact still says on the admissions website:
“SAT and/or ACT scores are important but are not the deciding factors. Strong grades in rigorous courses may cause the committee to overlook below average standardized test scores, but high board scores will never make up for an applicant’s weak course selection or grades.”

This person meets that qualification extremely nicely. I know it may be tempting to want Emory to focus on the scores, but the fact is, they really don’t. Everything else would have to be average or below average for them to probably even look at anything near or over a 1400.

@cadet1 : You have a decent shot, just do not expect anything.

Why are SAT2 subject tests being repeated? They are not an SAT 1. They are mostly for talent measurement. Taking them twice, unless you have two dramatically different sets of scores (suggesting the first attempts were a very off day), will have adcoms scratching their heads because their purpose is not to be gamed like the SAT 1. Furthermore, if the AP courses (which you took right after the course) have not flattering scores (4/5 on math and biology), then it will also look strange. If they already have good scores, there is absolutely no point in retaking SAT2’s as the AP exam scores would trump the scores on SAT 2 equivalents. Even for other schools, the first scores plus related AP would most likely be enough. Think about it from an educational standpoint: You are trying to attend selective universities and colleges that supposedly educate more rigorously than normal in STEM. Do you think the exams given in such courses would only be multiple choice like an SAT2, or do you think they would have a nice mixture of item types like the AP. Showing that you can take an MC test in a subject area vs. AP is just less impressive.

Let us consider this. Collegeboard posts some practice questions and considers this one from Biology subject test as medium difficulty:
“The pH of human blood is slightly basic. Which of the following is most likely to be the pH of human blood?”

On an AP or college level (even at a non-selective), this would be considered easy because it is just fact recall.

Another medium question:

“Which of the following correctly explains how a favorable genetic trait can increase in frequency in a population?”

Apparently, MIT encourages applicants to retake SAT II subject tests in order to score 750 or higher:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/2025081-mit-athletic-recruit-swimming.html#latest

@BiffBrown : They are idiots (yes, even MIT can have faulty ideas) for doing so. Other than them, I cannot see many other schools encouraging that. That literally has no educational benefit. The sole purpose would be to have a score that looks better compared to the 1000s of other applicants they get with such scores. It’s quite silly. Plus I doubt they are serious if the applicant has shown aptitude in many other ways. They probably are not that shallow. Again, if there are other indicators of aptitude, I would not waste time doing that. It just isn’t worth it. Chances are the student would land at somewhere else great that can push their talents as well. The chances of that having a real effect with the types of applicants MIT gets is just minimal. A person who did not get it the first time probably already has a much lower chance barring the scenario I proposed.

Thank you for your time!

@ahk2018
I think you making a great decision applying ED simply because, Emory and UCB have the best business schools you considering. Both programs require an internal transfer at the end of your second year. I would say UCB Hass is better than Goizueta but only 5% of UCB students gain transfer acceptance compared to Emory’s 70%. Also UCB does not offer financial aid for Out of State students.
You have a great application, you lack good EC’s but a great essay can make up for it.

Emory ED- High Match
UCB- High Match.

@VANDEMORY1342
I had another quick question- I put undecided for the ‘Future Plans’ section of Common App because I’m still debating on going into business or the pre-med track, but I put one or the other for certain schools (business for fordham, premed for northeastern); would this count against me at all when I’m applying to my schools?
Thanks again for your help!

@ahk2018 : Stay undecided please. It will help you in the “sea of pres” applying.

Hi, I would like to gauge my chances.

SAT I: did not take
ACT: 30 (31 superscore). Although I haven’t taken it since April and will be taking it in October.
SAT II: did not take yet, but taking two in November
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.97/4
Weighted GPA: 4.57/5
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 17/524

of AP classes or Full or Partial IB: AP Human Geo (5), AP US History (5), AP English Lang (5), AP Chemistry (2 :/ I know this sucks. I kept an A in the class but did not have that great a teacher even though I studied my ass off. Other Schools you are applying to: UNC (already applied EA), Duke, USC, Florida State, Tennessee (auto-admit), Tulane, Brown, Vanderbilt

General Comments: I loved Emory so much and could see myself there but i’m very conflicted because I also really enjoyed UNC but know they have very low OOS acceptance rate.

@Pastpower
Emory does not superscore the ACT, all they will see is a 30. A 30 is probably avg for URM’s at Emory as the range is a 31-34.
Since you did Emory Core and are a URM male I would say you are a Match for ED
High Match/low reach for RD.
i personally think UNC is a low match considering your demographics

Hello, I’d really appreciate it if you’d take the time to read through my ‘resume’ if you will :slight_smile:

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): 1st place in county science fair, 4th in state fair, congressman recognition, various youth in science and a couple scholarship awards, regional finalist in chem olympiad

Other Schools you are applying to: UNC Chapel Hill, UC Berkeley, Columbia, Barnard, UPenn, UF, UCF, Tulane, Fordham, NYU, UMiami, maybe Johns Hopkins.

General Comments: I’m rlly worried about my SAT I and GPA bringing me down as well as that I wasn’t active in STEM until 11th and 12th. Also, if anyone has any suggestions on how I can explain my lack of internships over the summer and other colleges to apply to, pls drop a comment :slight_smile:

@VANDEMORY1342 Although I know my score limits me, they did tell us that they know students are more than a Saturday test they took. I also know folks from my school who have gotten into Emory with 27’s and 29’s.

@Pastpower
Your score is fine, a 27 would severely limit you however, getting into Emory with a 27 or 28 is a rare event even with a hook ( as in less than 5% acceptance rate). Also scores might increase this year as well.

@Pastpower : Yeah, I would not base the chances that a person with a score lower than the bottom quartile on the fact that you know some folks who were in the bottom quartile. 29 isn’t too bad, but 27 I bet would put some one lower than the bottom 10% of admits. One should rather not cross their fingers and hope I’m in the bottom 5% of admits. Let us consider that. 5200 admits, and 5% may have like a 27ish, 260/5200. Not that many.

@AcademiaSavvy
As you said, your course load is lacking however your GPA is good.
Also your Native American status put you in a great position, your SAT score is fine.
All you need now is a well written essay.
Emory ED- Match/High Match

Oh I forgot to put the AP in front of them, but USH, Macroeconomics, Capstone Seminar, Capstone Research, Government, Statistics, and Latin are AP.

@EllieF
You have a great shot at all of the schools you are applying to. However Emory does not superscore the ACT so they will only see a 34, which is still a great score. I think your a match/ High Match for ED.
