Emory RD Class of 2022

Got into Emory and Oxford! :slight_smile: Have to wait for FA now

@TheTennisNinja How generous is Emory when it comes to financial aid?

Rejected by Emory
33 act
4.1 GPA (My school has a 4.3 scale and 4.3 being an A+ 4.0 being an A and 3.7 being an A- ect…)
6 AP classes-school only offers them after junior year
Honors classes as well
Disappointed I thought it would be at least waitlisted, definitely makes me nervous for follow up schools.

@nutmeghoneybee I really don’t want to be that one pretentious guy but I didn’t qualify for financial aid. However, I do have friends who got financial aid and it seems that if you are from a lower income household, the aid is quite generous but for middle class incomes, the aid isn’t as generous. In some cases, the financial aid office does come through but what I would recommend doing if your aid isn’t what you hoped for is arguing with the financial aid office. They usually give more money if you tell them that a comparable school gave you more.

Emory’s endowment is one of the highest in the nation. I really wonder where it all goes…

@TheTennisNinja Okay, thanks. I was accepted but idk how realistic it’ll be for me to go there if there isn’t good financial aid

I got waitlisted at Emory and rejected from Oxford. Anyone know the chances of getting of the waitlist or even how many got off last year?

@heyomayo12 I really hate to break it to you but chances of getting off are like finding a needle in a haystack - I would look at other schools.

Is scholarship info available?

@TheTennisNinja : Maintaining a giant healthcare system. The College nor other subunits are that rich compared to peers (yet are somehow miraculous performance/productivity wise). Also, there is substantial evidence that since Emory admits more “very low income” students in comparison to most peers, it pretty much exhausts Emory Advantage need based aid on those students and has to be comparatively skimpy on those in “grey areas” (highered costs are out of control when someone making 100k+ cannot afford these schools without significant discounts). It made the mistake of not developing a large endowment for merit aid to buffer against the expenses of the need-aid program. This is in the works apparently (the Scholarship Endowment). Furthermore, the median household income of Emory students is less than most peers (sometimes substantially, like almost 1/2) which means it doesn’t recruit as many “full-pay” domestic students. Recruiting heavily in the grey area (Emory seems very “new money” and “professional class”, so I am not surprised its median isn’t like a WUSTL or VU which is 200k+. Some other schools have 200k+ as well), and in the low income brackets (meaning those basically need all tuition and fees covered through grants and work study) means less money for the College to spread per person in the grey areas.

@caleegalee
WashU is very Stat oriented Emory, not so much. But congrats on your choices anyway.

@Toeupwms

To answer your question about Oxford v. Emory, Oxford has the following advantages:

  1. Much smaller class sizes
  2. Lectures/discussion sections/labs are taught by faculty members.
  3. Excellent teaching due in part to small class sizes but also due to an emphasis on teaching by faculty
  4. Lots of opportunities to lead clubs, participate in student government, etc. because of smaller class
  5. Oxford is thought to be somewhat friendlier than the Atlanta campus
  6. Because of small class sizes, it's easier to get to know your professors.

@TNgirl16
Yes, some students received merit based scholarships. Financial Aid offers will be delivered in the next 48 hours or so.

@amz1717 : I wish you would also stay in touch with science as well. Who knows? you may end up like these Emory alum:

@bernie12 My plan is to get a dual degree at Georgia Tech in biomedical engineering actually! :slight_smile: Super excited for the opportunity to combine my passions in both business and biology/engineering thanks to Emory! Crossing my fingers it works out, but we will see what happens with the financial aid office tomorrow! Thank you so much!
