Emory RD Class of 2022

Waitlisted Emory didn’t apply to Oxford.
3.98 gpa and 31 act
7/247 rank
good EC’s and leadership

Thought I had a good chance and was super bummed at this result… does anyone know what the stats are for getting off the waitlist? Also, did anyone hear if demonstrated interest factored into admissions decisions?

@sjlaing9 : Unfortunately not great: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/emory-university

They have only taken 40 or so off for the past 3 years.

And no they don’t consider it: http://apply.emory.edu/apply/faq.php

I actually applied for a dual degree in engineering with GaTech, so I just wanna know if they gonna let me do that?

@Hiddle no…

dang I tagged myself wth @sjlaing9 no…

@ejdieb : It doesn’t matter what you applied for…you can do what you want. You do know how that program works right? Much like GBS or nursing, you complete coursework in ECAS (but a whole major), and then you transfer to Tech for the engineering major. It isn’t like you are being directly admitted to an engineering school. Again, everyone is either admitted into Oxford or ECAS. What you do from there is up to you.

@ejdieb it sounds like you applied to Emory and you were admitted. Congratulations. However, as Bernie pointed out, that’s the only thing that happened. The rest is up to you. This website explains it all and your first step is meeting with the dual degree advisor. If you decide to attend an admitted students day, that would be a great time to seek this person out. http://college.emory.edu/dual-degree/engineering/explore-engineering.html

Congratulations. Where did you hear about merit scholarship?

@ejdieb what are your stats

Rejected, quite shocked tbh. SAT 1510, IB 40/42, SAT 2- Math 2-800, Chemistry- 740, ACT- 33. Quite good ECs and Amazing Extra-Curriculars.

@Diabolicity how were your essays?

@etibat
33 ACT
800 Math 2
790 Phys

4 AP exams
International student so we don’t really get a GPA
I had ok EC I guess?

accepted to oxford and rejected from emory…explains why i didn’t get the essence of emory email last weekend

stats: 32 ACT, 1490 SAT, 3.9 UW GPA, 8 APs, top 20-25% class rank (this probably hurt me). first-generation latinx. in-state

Exciting times, my D is also pemed deciding between Tulane and Oxford Emory. Great schools but also a tough choice.
Are there science research opportunities offered at these schools for undergrads? Socially, what do students do on these campuses on weekends?

@Dubaidream There are research opportunities at Oxford and the students are not competing against their older classmates which is a plus. My daughter did research as a 2nd semester freshman and is still working with the same professor as a sophomore. For weekend fun, I don’t think Oxford can compete with Tulane. We were able to revisit both schools on one trip. If you manage it, I think it will help you decide.

@bernie12 I think that it’s good, and not tacky or cliche. It’s helpful for incoming freshmen to gage who their classmates are going to be, and it’s helpful for next years applicants to see the fluctuation in acceptances. I actually look forward to the stats they post!

Also, a general question: Will Emory mail acceptance letters?

@chemmchimney Do you think Tulane is more prestigious? What do you mean Oxford can’t compete? Not very kind to post on an Oxford/Emory thread.

@collegetalk1010
You misunderstood what she said, Oxford can’t compete socially with Tulane as Tulane is in New Orleans while Oxford is in a rual area. However, Oxford would be considered more “prestigious” than Tulane by most as it is Emory at the end of the day.

@collegetalk1010 : When you read them from other institutions, they do not have a tone that suggest they are informing more so than bragging and appeasing current students and alum telling them that: “Look, we get more and more selective and popular each year, perhaps we are due for a rankings increase”…the reason I say this is because at the end of the day, only the matriculate data matters. Emory releases articles about matriculates in about August and it does release more fine grained details about demographis and is gracious enough to exclude SAT/GPA data and only talk about that while also highlighting some of the ambitions and mini-biographies of the students who are coming. It does this for both regular matriculates and Emory Scholars. I find this to be rare at other schools. A) Most don’t have an article about matriculates, and those who do really only talk about numbers (in both that article and the one about admits, it is usually only a list with hardly no writing. “We have the smartest, most diverse, most perfect class ever at X, and here is a list with all the numbers”. Yuck!!)The article about admits I believe serves the purpose of bragging. I can’t wait until the day one school comes out with such an article saying:“We were so selective this year that we only selected 1 applicant who scored a 1600 on the SAT and got a 4.0. They yielded so the yield is 100%. The demographics are based upon last year’s class because we decided to let them repeat their freshman year to increase their first year GPAs”. It is just getting a little ridiculous how reductionist some of the articles are.

thank you for sharing @ejdieb. Anyone else accepted in the joined Emory/GTech program who is willing to share their stats?
Thank you and Congratulations to all accepted!
