My son is also trying to decide between Tulane and Oxford Emory. Both are great for different reasons. I don’t envy him in making the decision. He did not think he had a shot at Emory because he was in the top 20% of his class (not top 10%) and his ACT was only a 30. However he has taken 15 AP/IB classes and has a 4.65 weighted GPA (3.76 unweighted). I am impressed that Emory, obviously, looks at the whole application and not just the numbers. I am looking forward to him making the decision.
@Diabolicity I’m sorry to hear about what happened. I was rejected by emory. But I couldn’t help but laugh when you said pretty good ECs and exceptional extracurriculars. What do you think EC stands for?
Has anyone received financial aid?
@bernadette857 If you can, try visiting both campuses. Visiting schools helped me immensely with making my choice as you get a sense as to which school feels like home.
FYI - My son’s financial aid info uploaded just a bit ago. He was accepted last night as well.
The Tulane or Oxford decision is an interesting one. Although I’m an Emory alum, I was very impressed with Tulane. They do an incredible job with campus visits and presentation of Tulane. It’s a relatively smaller school in the beautiful uptown section of New Orleans and the school has core values (community service, support for students, and even fun) and all are on message. It’s outstanding marketing. The admissions committee, by region, also tracks kids and contacts them and follows up. I couldn’t have been more impressed. At the end of the day, however, we looked at GBS and Freeman and Emory had the trump card. Good luck to anyone making that decision. Both are excellent universities.
Oxford has research opportunities in biology, chemistry and physics. Last year, those who participated in the breast cancer research project on campus did really well in getting summer research internships at other institutions.
Regarding social life, there are social clubs, weekend excursions with Volunteer Oxford and other like minded organizations to carry out service projects with other Oxfordians, a free shuttle that runs frequently on weekends to take students to the Atlanta campus.
I got 60k to go to emory and im middle class… what in the hell thats crazy
@introtoxx
Lol, is that good or bad? 60k/year?
60k a year, 69k total cost of attendance, so basically im only paying 9k a year to go. and our EFC was 12k so they gave more than they needed
@introtoxx
Oh yea, they usually give a bit more than what the EFC said, so congrats!!! Where else are you considering?
thanks! I’m waiting on USC and NYU. BU still costs about 20k for us rn, so we might bargain a little to see if they want to bring it down, but if not then emory is a great school for me
@introtoxx
Where did you find the FA information? I don’t see where it has been posted yet?
go to this site: http://www.studentaid.emory.edu then click on the link ‘opus student portal’ then generate a log in, then log in and it should be in ‘financial aid summary’ or something. its really confusing lmao
@introtoxx
Thank you and Congratulations!!!
Thank you TheTennisNinja and ljberkow. We just got back from Tulane and their admitted student day. You are right in that Tulane does a fantastic job with its marketing. It was a very impressive program. We have visited Oxford and the main campus once, but we will be going back to Oxford for an admitted student day in April. Also, thanks for the research information, BiffBrown. My son is interested in chemistry, so this may help sway his decision to Emory. Thanks everyone, this forum is very helpful.
@bernadette857 : Emory (both campuses) is comparatively excellent in undergraduate chemistry education compared to most places, but very rigorous, so be sure your son is okay with that.
Thanks. We are aware of the rigor of Emory’s chemistry program. That will also play into his decision.
Wow! Wish I had not found my FA! Lol. Did not even meet my EFC???
Still haven’t received financial aid
